Bullying: parents need to teach their children better

IUS Horizon October 10, 2010
Throughout my grade school years at St. Anthony’s School in Clarksville, I was teased for being too smart — a teacher’s pet, and for being overweight. I’ve suffered from being overweight all my life and during middle school — when I was at my biggest — the teasing got worse. It continued into my high school years at Our Lady of Providence. I was still teased about being fat, but I was also teased for some of the choices I made, mostly about the guys I dated.

Rubbertown coal-burning woes should be heard by community

IUS Horizon October 3, 2010
The cries of Louisville residents living near coal-burning power plants in Rubbertown need attention. Two Greenpeace protesters were arrested on Sept. 28 in Louisville following their stance against coal-burning emissions and waste in Kentucky.

Better ways to travel tipsy

IUS Horizon October 3, 2010
Sometimes, I just need a drink. I am a full-time senior in college, work two jobs and have a mortgage payment. While this may seem like not much for some, it is a busier and more stressful lifestyle than I have been used to. One of my jobs is being a server at a fine dining restaurant in downtown Louisville. I work there three nights a week, and I always work on Saturday nights.

Letters to the Editor: Illustrated Bible under scrutiny

IUS Horizon October 3, 2010
I considered writing after I noticed the inclusion of the “Illustrated Bible” in the previous issue of The Horizon. However, when I found it again appearing in the most recent issue, I have come to believe it may be intended to be a permanent inclusion, and I must write to express my outrage at what appears to be the assumption that a paper funded — at least in part — by the Student Activity Fees of a diverse student population is a proper venue to promote the views of any one religious text without the intentional inclusion of other views.

Students in need of better technology

IUS Horizon September 26, 2010
I like IU Southeast. It’s a great school, and I’ve learned a lot here. Many of my professors have done a great job of furthering my education. That said, my old high school has an edge on us when it comes to media technology. A lot of their equipment is superior to ours. Keep reading. It’s almost embarrassing.

Marjuana: Legalize our economic savior

IUS Horizon September 26, 2010
“Legalize it, don’t criticize it.” These words by Peter Tosh echoed throughout America in the late 1970s. Even throughout the 1960s and 1970s, when the “drug craze” hit the United States full force, activists were trying to get marijuana legalized. This was an effort that first began after marijuana was officially banned in 1937. Now, the controversy continues to heat up since California’s Proposition 19.

Forgive me, Roger, for I have sinned

IUS Horizon September 26, 2010
Michael Vick is, again, a starting quarterback in the NFL. Last season Vick returned to the NFL after missing two seasons while serving a federal prison sentence for running a dogfighting operation out of his Virginia home.

Grenadiers fall, Eagles soar

IUS Horizon September 19, 2010
The IUS Women’s Tennis Team was defeated by the University of Southern Indiana by a score of 5-4 on Saturday, Sept. 11. IU Southeast went up against USI in three doubles games and six singles games. The Grenadiers started strong by winning two out of three doubles games but were not able to win the three singles games needed to win the match.

Don’t pass judgment on gay marriage

IUS Horizon September 19, 2010

Marriage is supposed to be a union where couples share a common bond. Sometimes the bond can mean going through the good, the bad and the ugly to test the true nature of love. Love can mean being in...

Reality beats Facebook

IUS Horizon September 19, 2010

If you don’t understand what Facebook is, I’ll pray for you. If you still have not created an account, I’m proud of you. If you are like me, you now understand that Facebook isn’t what it used...

Medical disclaimer: May cause giggle fit

IUS Horizon September 19, 2010
Advertisements are everywhere. Our entire life, we are consumed by commercials, billboards and ads. Even movies showcase products that affect our way of thinking. I would have to say the most interesting advertisements I’ve witnessed are medical commercials. They always include unrealistic scenarios following a list of possible dangerious side effects that no one ever understands.

Religious freedom carries hefty price

IUS Horizon September 12, 2010
Last week, after being offered a Bible several times in McCullough Plaza, discussing burning Qurans in my Religion in American Culture class and following the media coverage about the debated Islamic Center two blocks from Ground Zero in New York City, I was reminded that freedom of religion carries a hefty price. Nine years ago, our country was violently reminded that national security can be compromised and our long-standing comfortable status quo can be subjected to radical attacks. Many are curious if America has recovered from the falling of The World Trade Centers and the thousands of lives lost that day.
