A part-time staff member of the IUS Math Lab was arrested in the Evergreen East Parking Lot on Sept. 22. Robert J. Veith, Math Lab staff member, was arrested for reckless driving near campus and refusing to let a car pass.

Salary freeze gone; merit raises begin

In August, IU Trustees responded to IU President Michael McRobbie’s call for merit-based raises by approving the plan. This decision comes after a two-year freeze on pay raises was implemented throughout the IU system. McRobbie received some criticism regarding this decision given the state’s economy. IUS Vice Chancellor of Administration and Finance Dana Wavle said he disagrees with this criticism.

The IUS Board of Advisers recognized a need to educate the community about IU Southeast. “The need to educate the community about IU Southeast is important,” Jenny Wolfe, director of University Communications, said. The IUS Accreditation Committee said IU Southeast didn’t seem to be recognized in Southern Indiana for doing things in the community.

WorldFest brings culture to Louisville

About a dozen IUS students experienced cultures from around the world at WorldFest 2010, which took place at the Belvedere on the Louisville Riverfront Sept. 3. Campus Life sponsored a bus that left McCullough Plaza at 5:30 p.m. The students attended the eighth annual WorldFest without having to worry about driving through downtown Louisville and finding parking.

IUS gets $90K military grant

IU Southeast recently received a $90,250 grant from the Military Family Research Institute at Purdue University. This money was given to help create new opportunities and services for military students, veterans and their families.

SGA debates honorary degree

Discussions continued about an posthumous degree for a student who was killed in a car accident this summer in the Student Government Association’s meeting on Sept. 9. Jimmy and Suzie Burrier, parents of 19-year-old Bethany Burrier, asked the SGA to give them a diploma in their daughter’s memory. Bethany Burrier died in a car accident on May 6.

Former professor becomes dean of business at IU Kokomo

After 17 years at IU Southeast, Frank Wadsworth, former professor of business, is now the new dean of the School of Business at IU Kokomo. In addition to being a professor at IU Southeast, Wadsworth was also the director of International Programs. “There is a terrific group of students, staff and faculty at IU Kokomo, and I look forward to helping everyone be successful in the future,” Wadsworth said.

Playing Wall Street: Financial lab opens

Part of learning at a university is the art of playing pretend, or learning in a simulated setting. For business students at IU Southeast, the Sander’s Financial Markets Lab, which opened in June, will provide just such an opportunity. The opening of the lab was celebrated with a ceremonial ringing of a bell to mimic the New York Stock Exchange.

Bookstore not affected by potential company sale

The IUS Bookstore owner, Barnes & Noble, made the announcement they will be exploring the option of selling their company. Barnes & Noble released a statement saying, due to falling stock, the board is considering all options, including a possible sale. Barnes & Noble not only is the largest book retailer, owning 720 namesake bookstores across the nation but is also the owner of the IUS Bookstore.
