Phillies’ Halladay makes history, says no-no to Reds

IUS Horizon October 10, 2010
The Cincinnati Reds made the playoffs for the first time this season since 1995. I was all set to write about what that means to long-suffering Reds fans, but then Roy Halladay no-hit the Reds in Game 1 of the National League Division Series on Wednesday, Oct. 6. The no-hitter — and to a greater extent the perfect game — have proven to be two of the most difficult feats to achieve in sports.

Bullying: parents need to teach their children better

IUS Horizon October 10, 2010
Throughout my grade school years at St. Anthony’s School in Clarksville, I was teased for being too smart — a teacher’s pet, and for being overweight. I’ve suffered from being overweight all my life and during middle school — when I was at my biggest — the teasing got worse. It continued into my high school years at Our Lady of Providence. I was still teased about being fat, but I was also teased for some of the choices I made, mostly about the guys I dated.

Student mixes hard work, chemistry

IUS Horizon October 10, 2010
Students walking down to The Commons to grab a bite to eat or relax could spot a large poster of a chemistry student on the wall. Even if you don’t see him on a poster, you’ll probably notice Andrew Stillman, chemistry senior, making his way to one of his classes or one of the numerous organizations and activities he is involved in at IU Southeast. From orchestra and band to the Student Program Council and the Student Life Committee, Stillman is a busy man.

Student rides along with Metro Police

IUS Horizon October 10, 2010
Charles Rader, criminal justice junior, said he considers the two police ride-alongs he went on in the summer of 2007 to be an amazing experience. The ride-alongs were a way for Rader to get some hands-on experience in a profession he has dreamed of entering since he was a child. Rader said he remembers going to his older brother’s baseball games when he was young and looking up to his brother’s baseball coach, who was a firefighter.

IUS Horizon October 10, 2010
The Fall Festival on Oct. 3 helped kick off the Harvest Homecoming festivities. The annual hot air balloon race that accompanies the festival was canceled due to high winds. Janie Spitznagel, adviser in the Academic Success Center and representative for the Harvest Homecoming Board of Directors, said officials checked wind speeds at an altitude of 2,000 to 3,000 feet, and the wind speeds were more than 25 to 30 mph.

Disabled student seeks acceptance

IUS Horizon October 4, 2010
Michelle Willingham, psychology freshman, endures cerebral palsy and fears her condition may limit her ability to carry out her dream of being a mother and having a family one day. “My greatest fear in my life is to have a life with no noise,” Willingham said. “A life where I come home from my career and there are no kids, no significant other. That scares the hell out of me. That’s my greatest fear. I fear it every day. I just don’t want to end up alone.”

Professionals critique résumés for students

IUS Horizon October 4, 2010
Local professionals critiqued students’ résumés for free during the semi-annual Café Résumé event hosted by the Office of Career Services. The critiques were offered at two times — during lunch and in the evening — at a booth in front of the University Grounds Coffee Shop. “Twice a year, we invite employers and HR professionals here,” Jim Kanning, director of Career Services, said. “These are people who see résumés all the time, and know what they are looking for.”

SGA swears in new senators

IUS Horizon October 4, 2010
Three students were sworn in as senators to the Student Government Association during the meeting Sept. 30, marking nine new senators sworn in since the beginning of the semester. The addition of Bronson Bast, home-schooled high school senior, Yana Baker, psychology freshman, and Max Johnson, general studies freshman, to the SGA gives the organization 17 senators and a total of 23 SGA members. “In order to have a full senate, we would need to have 24 senators,” senate chair Jonathan Moody, psychology junior, said. “We haven’t had a full senate in the past several years, but we normally start out the year with only six or seven senators, so we’re starting out strong this year.”
