Grenadiers lose match, snap win streak

IUS Volleyball’s nine-game win streak came to end on Tuesday, Sept. 28, after being defeated by Campbellsville University. The Grenadiers lost to the Tigers in three straight sets, 25-9, 25-23 and 25-17. The loss drops IU Southeast to 10-8 for the season.

The IUS Volleyball team defeated Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Sept. 24 in the Activities Building. The Grenadiers lost the first set, 25-8 and the third set, 25-22, but were able to pull out a win in the second, fourth and final sets, 25-22, 25-16 and 16-14. “We definitely started slow, but we were able to come back and finish well for a win in the end,” Lindsey Ragland, sophomore right-side hitter, said.

IUS serves Mountain State

The IUS Volleyball team defeated Mountain State University in the first match of three in the Activities Building on Saturday, Sept. 25. The Grenadiers won the last three games of the match, bringing the Grenadiers’ record to 9-7 for the season. IU Southeast fought in the first game, ultimately losing 25-22.

Rubbertown coal-burning woes should be heard by community

The cries of Louisville residents living near coal-burning power plants in Rubbertown need attention. Two Greenpeace protesters were arrested on Sept. 28 in Louisville following their stance against coal-burning emissions and waste in Kentucky.

Better ways to travel tipsy

Sometimes, I just need a drink. I am a full-time senior in college, work two jobs and have a mortgage payment. While this may seem like not much for some, it is a busier and more stressful lifestyle than I have been used to. One of my jobs is being a server at a fine dining restaurant in downtown Louisville. I work there three nights a week, and I always work on Saturday nights.

Letters to the Editor: Illustrated Bible under scrutiny

I considered writing after I noticed the inclusion of the “Illustrated Bible” in the previous issue of The Horizon. However, when I found it again appearing in the most recent issue, I have come to believe it may be intended to be a permanent inclusion, and I must write to express my outrage at what appears to be the assumption that a paper funded — at least in part — by the Student Activity Fees of a diverse student population is a proper venue to promote the views of any one religious text without the intentional inclusion of other views.

New SGA senator advocate for LGBT Kentuckians

Yana Baker, political science freshman, is a new member of the Student Government Association. Baker was sworn in as a full senator on Sept. 30. Erick Marquez, communications junior and secretary for the SGA, was her mentor during her probationary period before she was sworn in. He said he enjoyed mentoring Baker.

Student explains passion for history

Heidi Springfield, history senior, has an evident passion for history. Springfield is also pursuing minors in German and Religious Studies. Springfield, who already has an associate’s degree in general education, was inspired to study history during her time living in Kaiserslaughtern, Germany. Springfield lived in Germany for four years as a military wife.

Munchie mania: Battling the Freshman 15

Weight gain is a problem that nearly every American battles at some point in their lives. However, even with all the weight loss campaigns, the average college student fails to realize there is a growing problem with weight gain for their age group or feel they have no reason to worry. “I’ve been this skinny my entire life, so I don’t think I have to worry about any weight gain,” Tyler Delaney, music freshman, said. “The only difference I hope to see is height.” According to a study by Washington University in St. Louis, more than 70 percent of college students gain an average of 15 pounds in their first year at college.

Campus Carnival

Students and their families came to campus to enjoy a Mini-Carnival in McCullough Plaza. The Children’s Hour Series, part of the Student Program Council, hosted the Mini-Carnival to welcome families to the campus. Michelle Harris, SPC chair of Children’s Hour Series, said she was pleased to see the families enjoying IU Southeast.

IUS alumnus directs zombie film

About 125 zombies swarmed around the 200 block of Pearl Street in New Albany on Sept. 19. Carl Cart, IUS alumnus, is the man responsible for this zombie invasion. The 2003 graduate is a local independent filmmaker and is currently working on a zombie comedy titled “Queens of the Dead.”
