Sophomore hopes for career in finance following college

Kevin Slaughter, 20-year-old finance sophomore, plays guard for the IUS men’s basketball team, but that’s not all he does. Even though he said he loves playing basketball, he doesn’t see it in his future after graduation. His goal is to become a stock broker, hopefully in Chicago. “My father used to live there,” Slaughter said. “I think that’s where I want to live, too.”

You totally know what I mean

So, like, I totally have noticed something about, like, how people talk. You know? It’s like they really don’t know what they’re, like, talking about. Or, like, using questions at the end of the sentence, you know what I mean? These questions which lead others onto our own path of uncertainty, you know?

Former editor Jerod Clapp used to complain that the Student Government Association did nothing. I’m not Jerod, but I’d like to take this opportunity to encourage them to keep doing nothing on a particular subject. In the SGA story that ran in the Feb. 8 edition of The Horizon, Matthew Chinn wrote that the SGA passed a bill to combine the two elections they are scheduled to have this year.

Chinese professor speaks about housing development

Bin Li, professor and chair of the Sociology Department at Central-South University in China, spoke at IU Southeast. He came and spoke at an IUS Diversity Academy event in University Center North on Tuesday, Feb. 2, during the lunch hour. Li spoke about housing development in China, a subject he has been specializing in since 2003. The event was hosted by the new IUS Diversity Academy, which was formed during the summer.

Sociology professor uses interesting teaching methods

Sam Sloss, professor of sociology, is known for his unique teaching methods and techniques. For more than 20 years, Sloss has taught many different classes for the Department of Sociology, and he is known for teaching classes that other professors don’t usually teach. Classes Sloss has taught range from discussing Religion and Society, Games, Leisure and Play, Sociology of Humor and, this semester, he is teaching Food and Society and Issues in Evolution.

Reality TV junkie

I find myself watching many shows during the week, and I have no clue why. I watch such a random selection of shows that have nothing to do with each other. I am addicted, even though I think most of the shows on television are a useless way to pass time.

Magic show brings local families to campus

The Student Program Council held their “SPC’s Children’s Hour: Magical Fun,” in the Hoosier Room on Sunday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. The free event showcased magician Rusty Ammerman and offered pizza, juice and water to all in attendance. . Before the show started, the audience was treated to pizza and juice prepared by the IUS catering service.

Alpha Phi observes Wear Red Day with ribbons

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in America. The Alpha Phi sorority held an on-campus event Feb. 4 called “Wear Red Day.” The day was meant to help raise awareness about heart disease.
