Journalist talks about Taliban imprisonment

Award-winning journalist Jere Van Dyk shared his 45-day experience of his Taliban imprisonment. This was the first of six speakers in a series hosted by IUS International Studies Program. Dyk spoke about his ordeal with the Taliban to more than 40 IUS students and faculty in the Hoosier Room West on Wednesday, Sept. 15.

Sexting: When privates go public

The IUS Common Experience Program presented a seminar on sexting and cyber-bullying. Amy Freyn and Mary Bradley, assistant professors of education, spoke to students on the aspects of bullying. Bradley said there are difficulties defining cyber-bullying and asked for audience opinions of what the law should say.

Math Lab employee arrested

A part-time staff member of the IUS Math Lab was arrested in the Evergreen East Parking Lot on Sept. 22. Robert J. Veith, Math Lab staff member, was arrested for reckless driving near campus and refusing to let a car pass.

SGA talks about new student waitlist

new student enrollment waitlist was brought to the Student Government Association meeting on Sept. 23. The waitlist will be introduced in the spring semester. Janice Williams, registrar, brought the new enrollment procedure to the SGA’s attention and explained how the waitlist works.

Student drinking, smoking reported

Sept. 17 at 12:03 a.m. Loud students and possible drinking was reported in Grove Lodge. However, the officer found no signs of alcohol. Sept. 20 at 5:20 p.m. A car in the Hickory Parking Lot had its doors open. An officer was dispatched. The owner was e-mailed, and IUS Police advised the car owner to call if items were missing.

Lone junior leads Grenadier volleyball

When looking for the leader of the IUS Volleyball Team, one candidate stands out. Lauren McCartin, computer graphics junior, plays as the libero and defensive specialist. She is the only junior on a team that has no seniors and five freshmen. At 22 years old, McCartin is also nearly two years older than any of her teammates.

We’re streaking: Grenadiers win sixth straight

The IUS Volleyball Team defeated rival Spalding University for its sixth straight win on Sept. 21 in the Activities Building The Grenadiers defeated the Golden Eagles in three straight sets, 25-20, 25-21 and 25-12. After starting the season 1-7, the Grenadiers have fought back and won six straight, bringing their record to 7-7 for the season.

Passion for film reflects in career

Tracy Heightchew, Box Office supervisor of the Ogle Center, said she is happy with her life and career. Heightchew has been working at the Ogle Center since January 2009. “I am in charge of all ticket sales, house management and scheduling,” Heightchew said. “I work with campus groups, touring artists and particularly, the music and theatre departments.”

Staff member looks to increase activity

Perry Brown, head of intramural sports and fitness center coordinator, has been employed at IU Southeast for four years. Brown said he took the position at IU Southeast because he wanted to get back into campus recreation. “I used to work as a recreation center worker in Henderson, Ky., and, when the position opened at IU Southeast, I couldn’t pass it up,” Brown said. “I really enjoy the campus environment and athletics.”

Students in need of better technology

I like IU Southeast. It’s a great school, and I’ve learned a lot here. Many of my professors have done a great job of furthering my education. That said, my old high school has an edge on us when it comes to media technology. A lot of their equipment is superior to ours. Keep reading. It’s almost embarrassing.

Marjuana: Legalize our economic savior

“Legalize it, don’t criticize it.” These words by Peter Tosh echoed throughout America in the late 1970s. Even throughout the 1960s and 1970s, when the “drug craze” hit the United States full force, activists were trying to get marijuana legalized. This was an effort that first began after marijuana was officially banned in 1937. Now, the controversy continues to heat up since California’s Proposition 19.

Michael Vick is, again, a starting quarterback in the NFL. Last season Vick returned to the NFL after missing two seasons while serving a federal prison sentence for running a dogfighting operation out of his Virginia home.
