Lodge to fulfill need for housing

IU Southeast broke ground for the newest campus lodge during a ceremony on April 25. Timber Lodge will be the sixth housing unit on campus with a projected opening in fall 2013 with an additional 76 beds. “Much like four years ago, this is also a very special moment for we seized upon a unique opportunity to add another lodge and thereby meet a growing student demand for living and learning on this beautiful campus,” Chancellor Sandra Patterson-Randles said. “This is indeed a very special milestone because this lodge, called Timber Lodge, will be our first LEED certified building on campus.”

Grenadiers get chopped down

The IUS baseball team was narrowly defeated by the Mighty Oaks of Oakland City University, with a final score of 10-9 on April 2. “I think they just showed up here because they had to,” Ben Reel, IUS baseball head coach, said. “They didn’t show up to win.” However, the Grenadiers put up a strong fight before the end of the game.

Children’s Center celebrates Bubbles, Bugs and Bulbs

IU Southeast celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with an event full of Bubbles, Bugs and Bulbs. Faculty, staff and students brought their children to the event sponsored by the Children’s Center and Family Programs. The children participated in six workstations of interactive activities. The children were given duffle bags to color and put their crafts in. There was also a station to decorate flowers with stickers.

Donated dresses save Henryville prom

Erin Tyler, business marketing and management junior, is collecting donations of prom and pageant dresses for storm victims. On March 2, a tornado outbreak traveled through Southern Indiana and Kentucky. Washington and Clark counties were greatly affected, and Henryville schools also had significant damage, causing students to finish their school years in alternate locations. Tyler said she considers prom one of her best high school memories and could not imagine a young girl not having the same opportunity.

Performers swagger for drag show

Dressed scantily clad in high heels, drag queens took over the stage in Stem Hall for the annual IUS Drag Show on March 3. The Gay Straight Alliance put on the drag show for the fourth consecutive year. This year’s show featured seven acts comprised of students, staff and members of the community. The show was a collaborative effort from many organizations on campus. The Student Nursing Association helped promote the production of the drag show, as well as the IUS Civil Liberties Union, Phi Sigma Sigma and the Gamers’ Society.

Ben & Jerry’s co-founder churns up discussion

Jerry Greenfield, co-owner of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, spoke about his multi-million dollar business at IU Southeast in the Ogle Center on Feb. 21. Greenfield was the keynote speaker as a part of IU Southeast’s Sanders Speaker Series. Judge Carlton and Sue Sanders have donated $568,140 to the IU Southeast business school. Of that amount, $300,000 went to the Sanders Speaker Series and the remaining money went to establishing the Sanders Trading Lab.

Magician returns to IUS

Families gathered in the Hoosier Room to watch the third annual magic show performed by Rusty Ammerman on Feb. 19. The free event brought almost 50 people to IU Southeast to enjoy an hour and a half long comedy ridden magic show. Ammerman is from Connersville, Ind., and, during the show, he brought several members of the audience on stage with him to participate in tricks. For nearly every act, Ammerman invited a member of the audience to join him or required audience participation.

Rivals race to rack up points

The Grenadiers celebrated homecoming with a 110-76 win over Alice Lloyd Eagles on Feb. 11 in the Activities Building. The win brought the IU Southeast Grenadiers record to 19-7 and 9-1 in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. This win was the fifth consecutive win at home for the IUS men’s basketball team. The Grenadiers started the game with a strong lead on the Eagles. Both teams played a defensive game, resulting in 39 shots from the free throw line.

Students employ tips for better résumés

The IUS Résumé Preparation Workshop was an informative and educational event that took place in University Center North, room 112 on Feb. 1. This workshop was offered by the Career Development Center. Trey Lewis, director of the Career Development Center, greeted students before presenting his résumé Power Point. Lewis said the four components a student should use are what, when, why and how.

Musical performance premieres

The Robinson Theater will open with its first play — a musical called The Fantasticks — of the semester on Feb. 10 at 8 p.m. in the Ogle Center. The original production of The Fantasticks first premiered in May 1960 in Greenwich Village, NY, and has been appearing on off-Broadway for the past 70 years. It is he longest-running show in the U.S. “It’s become such a classic show,” Jesse Brown, theater graduate, said. “I think that’s in large part due to the fact that it tells such a simple story, one we can relate to on some level.”

Legendary jockey leaps through hurdles

In honor of National Mentoring Month, the Center for Mentoring welcomed Pat Day, Hall of Fame jockey, to speak about his life’s successes on and off the race track on Jan. 13 in the Hoosier Room. Since its creation at the Harvard School of Public Health in 2002, January has been declared National Mentoring Month, a time when people across the country are encouraged to show gratitude to those in their lives that have shown them direction and guidance. June Huggins, director for the Center of Mentoring, said Jan. 26 is Thank Your Mentor Day, and people celebrating will write personal letters to their mentors to thank them for the various ways in which they have been supportive. She said a mentor can be anyone — a teacher, a church member, a neighbor or a relative.

Artist draws on experience

To kick off 2012, the Ronald Barr Gallery opened with the “Drawing on Experience” exhibit by Emily Sheehan, artist and visiting assistant professor of fine arts, on Jan. 11. Seven works are represented in this show. All the works are based on the same concept of perceptual drawing, or, in other words, drawing from observation in a multi-sensory way. “I completed three of the works in the show prior to my coming to teach at IU Southeast,” Sheehan said. “The rest of the work in the show is brand new, completed in my campus studio space in the last six months.”
