Students learn about parenthood early in life

With a crying infant in the background and a midterm to study for, being a student and a mother can require a lot of time management and patience. Hannah Fischer, business marketing freshman, juggles being a young mother, a student and an employee all while trying to keep herself afloat. Fischer said she was 17 years old and a senior at Butler High School when she found out she was pregnant.

Social Sciences hosts forum on Islamic center

Students and faculty gathered to participate in a panel discussion on Oct. 4 about the proposed building of a Muslim community center near Ground Zero. The purpose of the discussion was to inform and engage the audience with the issue of the ongoing effects of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Each speaker was given 10 minutes to present their position, and then the discussion was open to the panel to interact with one another. The last half of the presentation was open to the floor, and all students and faculty could participate. Sam Sloss, professor of sociology, focused on the facts about the actual events of Sept. 11 and the proposed building of the Muslim community center.

Student shares experiences in Madrid

Jimmy Polivka, Spanish senior, shared his experiences studying abroad in Madrid. Polivka spent 11 months in Madrid studying at Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Polivka said he had to decide between two different programs. “One program was in Peru, and the other was in Spain,” Polivka said. “I chose Spain because my family is Spanish.”

Campus Boogie sparks student interest

A crowd of students gathered in the Robinson Theater on Aug. 26 when Campus Boogie had its annual dance-off. Campus Boogie is a dance competition where several students go head-to-head to win the Campus Boogie plaque, a $300 prize to spend toward the organization and bragging rights as the “best dance crew” at IU Southeast. Although it is an annual event, this Campus Boogie differed from previous years.
