Getting involved in local politics can be a grueling experience, but it’s fascinating at the same time. In the fall, I was asked to come aboard the Clark County auditor campaign. My candidate, Janis Caldwell, has been a friend of my family for some time, so naturally I told her I would help her campaign. Bethany Burrier, criminal justice sophomore, was killed by a Jeffersonville sanitation truck when it struck her car from behind.

Judicial system has flaws; deal with it

Many people within the prison walls will say the system is stacked against them, while some on the outside will argue it’s built to their advantage. Fortunately, it’s not designed for either. It’s built to protect our republic and make it extremely difficult for the innocent to suffer. Sometimes people who may seem guilty are not convicted for one reason or another, but it’s part of our system. It happens. Get over it.

SGA reviews achievements throughout year

After planning an inauguration event, the Student Government Association discussed what they’ve achieved this year. First, during the Thursday, April 15, meeting, SGA members planned an event for the upcoming inauguration of president-elect, Amanda Denbo, business senior, and her running mate, Tristan Williamson, English junior. Members allocated a budget of $700 for the event and plan to hand out free hot dogs to students on April 22 — the day they will be inaugurated.

SGA discusses textbook rental program for IUS Bookstore

After the week-long break, the Student Government Association got back to work by discussing a possible Barnes & Noble book rental pilot program. During the Thursday, April 1, meeting, SGA press secretary Candice Boudreaux, business junior, introduced a textbook rental program resolution to urge members of the IUS faculty to support the IUS Bookstore possibly running a pilot program with IU Bloomington.

Denbo defeats Bonsall in SGA President election

After entering the race less than a week before the Student Government Association election, SGA president-elect Amanda Denbo, business senior, officially defeated the presidential incumbent, James Bonsall. Denbo and her running mate, Tristan Williamson, English junior, received 54 percent of the student votes, successfully defeating current SGA president Bonsall, business junior, and his running mate, Kevin Evans, elementary education freshman.

SGA faces election controversy

Tempers flared during the Student Government Meeting on Thursday, March 11, leading to a withdrawal of both presidential and vice presidential candidates and the SGA treasurer quitting entirely. It all started when SGA senator Nick Garing, political science junior, introduced a bill during the meeting that would lower the constitutional requirement that executive SGA members maintain a 2.5 GPA to a 2.2 GPA and announcing he intended to run for an executive position.

During the March 4 Student Government Association meeting, a new senator was voted in and a judicial attendance requirement bill was again met with hostility. This time, the bill was tabled for later revisions. During a discussion of the bill, four SGA members called it redundant.

SGA amendment voted down

During a brief meeting on Feb. 18, the Student Government Association voted-down an amendment to the groups’ constitution. They also prepared a trip to Kokomo, Ind., for the following morning of Feb. 19. Three SGA members headed to IU Kokomo the morning of Friday, Feb. 19, to attend the years first IU Board of Trustees meeting.
