Fall Festival celebrates Harvest weekend

The Fall Festival on Oct. 3 helped kick off the Harvest Homecoming festivities. The annual hot air balloon race that accompanies the festival was canceled due to high winds. Janie Spitznagel, adviser in the Academic Success Center and representative for the Harvest Homecoming Board of Directors, said officials checked wind speeds at an altitude of 2,000 to 3,000 feet, and the wind speeds were more than 25 to 30 mph.

Rubbertown coal-burning woes should be heard by community

The cries of Louisville residents living near coal-burning power plants in Rubbertown need attention. Two Greenpeace protesters were arrested on Sept. 28 in Louisville following their stance against coal-burning emissions and waste in Kentucky.

Religious freedom carries hefty price

Last week, after being offered a Bible several times in McCullough Plaza, discussing burning Qurans in my Religion in American Culture class and following the media coverage about the debated Islamic Center two blocks from Ground Zero in New York City, I was reminded that freedom of religion carries a hefty price. Nine years ago, our country was violently reminded that national security can be compromised and our long-standing comfortable status quo can be subjected to radical attacks. Many are curious if America has recovered from the falling of The World Trade Centers and the thousands of lives lost that day.

Softball team splits doubleheader with Brescia

The IUS softball team split a doubleheader against the Brescia University on Saturday, April 10, at the Koetter Sports Complex. The Grenadiers started slow in the first game. Brescia jumped ahead, posting five runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Senior pitcher puts together solid campaign during his final season

Adam Lipke, general studies senior, was named Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 22 to March 28. He gained the title after pitching a complete game shutout in a 6-0 win against Asbury College on March 27. Lipke struck out eight batters and surrendered only four hits during the game. This is the first time he has earned the award this season.

Business lecturer dies

The business school suffered a loss during spring break. Gregory Krieger, visiting lecturer in accounting, died Wednesday, March 24, at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, Ind. He was 55 years old.

Thompson-Book’s name fits job, passion

Barbara Thompson-Book, associate professor of elementary education, smiled and said she couldn’t have had a better last name. Thompson-Book has been teaching children’s literature and reading courses at IU Southeast for the past 13 years.

A new class this semester has been created to help student veterans make the transition from the military to civilian life. The six-week class, J151 Career Exploration and Development, provides student veterans with resources and workshops on career development.

Dorm room floods

A broken water supply line dumped water into a dorm, causing damages. This happened in Forest Lodge on the morning of Saturday, Jan. 30. “Several hundred gallons of water were lost,” Jim Wolfe, director of Physical Plant, said. Wolfe said the water leaked from the supply line in the ceiling of Forest Lodge, room 102, with water soaking the carpet, furniture and resident’s belongings.
