Seminar connects social networking, career opportunities

Students gathered in University Center, room 122, to learn how to use social networking and make connections for careers. Jim Kanning and Lynn Prinz, directors of Career Services, presented “Digital Social Networking.” The seminar was sponsored by the Veteran’s Program, Career Services and the Intern to Earn program. Intern to Earn is a new intern program for the greater Louisville area that provides intern opportunities to keep interns working and learning in the community.

Last year’s crime report released; shows increase

Soon after being named the fourth safest on-campus housing university by thedailybeast.com, IU Southeast released the 2009 Crime and Fire Safety Annual Report. This report details all of the criminal activities that occurred on-campus last year. The number of incidents reported in 2009 was slightly up from the previous years, but the criminal activity remained relatively minimal. Monica Wise, IUS Police officer, said she credits the low crime rate on campus to the officers’ involvement with students. “We take proactive approach in community policing,” Wise said. “Instead of sitting in a car, we get out and talk to students and faculty. [The department] establishes relationships with students, building a rapport so students feel comfortable talking to us.”

Campus Carnival

Students and their families came to campus to enjoy a Mini-Carnival in McCullough Plaza. The Children’s Hour Series, part of the Student Program Council, hosted the Mini-Carnival to welcome families to the campus. Michelle Harris, SPC chair of Children’s Hour Series, said she was pleased to see the families enjoying IU Southeast.

Smarti Gras exposes students

The lounge in the top floor of the University Center hosted Penthouse Party on the Bayou on Sept. 15 and 16. The party was themed after Mardi Gras and organized by the Adult Student Center, Career Services, Counseling Services and the Mentoring Center. The event, referred to as Smarti Gras, exposed students to the services offered on the top floor of the University Center South.

Vacant position in athletics filled

Joe Glover, interim athletic director, and the IUS Athletics Department announced Aug. 18 that Clay Ryan had been named the new interim sports information specialist. Ryan is filling the position left by Glover, who became interim athletic director after the resignation of Pat Mrozowski in July. Glover said he is more than confident that Ryan is a perfect fit for the position.
