Student zombies infected with dancing fever

Zombified prom kings and queens filled the Hoosier Room for the first ever Zombie Prom, hosted by the English Club on Nov. 2. Students engaged in an open-mic reading session to start the night, snacked on food and danced the night away, zombie style. The open mic reading session included poems and fiction pieces written by students. Karyl Anne Geary, English senior and president of the English Club, said they hosted the event to do something fun and try to attract some new members for the English Club.

New players magnify vitality of IUS team

The IUS men’s basketball team has only one remaining starting player from last season, Jake Simpson, sophomore guard. Simpson said the new team is practicing, and, with hard work and determination, they should be able to continue to lead on the IUS men’s basketball legacy. “We are going to have to pick up on a lot of things because we’re young,” Simpson said. “We have a whole new system and a lot of players from different schools.”

Grenadiers debut strength

Students poured into the bleachers for a scrimmage game on Oct. 24 to get a glimpse of what to expect from the IUS women’s basketball team this season. The Lady Grenadiers played Vincennes University in a scrimmage game that was scored in two separate games. IUS women’s basketball head coach Robin Farris said he thought the team played outstanding because of their defense and communication.

Junior steps up to lead tennis team

In an absence of seniors on the IUS women’s tennis team, Ashley Bunch, nursing junior, has stepped up to be the tennis captain. “If our coach is running late or if she’s not there for some reason, I get everyone organized,” Bunch said. Bunch started playing tennis when she was seven, and she played varsity tennis for three years at Bedford High School.

Biology adjunct inspired by lizards, outdoors

Neil Cornell, adjunct professor of biology, said he admires nature and the outdoors. Cornell’s love for nature started when his father showed him a lizard in a jar. “It was one of my first memories,” Cornell said. “It was the most amazing thing that I had encountered in my early life.”

Student finds fulfillment through fraternity, family values

Joe Voss, music business junior, is a trumpet and keyboard player, actor, secretary for Pike fraternity and is from a family of 15. Voss said he has played the trumpet for 13 years and the keyboard for three years. “I got interested in music when I was 8 or 9,” Voss said. “My family is really musical. My parents encouraged us all to get an instrument just for stress relief or as a talent to have when we’re older.”

Student continues zest for family-owned ice cream business

Derek Young, finance and accounting senior, said being around his parent’s ice cream stores, Zesto and Chillers, is helping him gain experience for his future. “The experience that I have learned through a family-owned, local business has been amazing,” Young said. “I’m currently on the financing board of Chillers, and it’s helped give me more business knowledge than my degree has.” Zesto is an ice cream parlor with two locations nearby on Charlestown Road in New Albany and on Lewis and Clark Parkway in Clarksville.

Enrollment falls back for semester

IU Southeast enrollment dropped by 5 percent for the fall 2012 semester and has the smallest population out of the eight regional Indiana University campuses. Christopher Crews, associate director of Admissions, said IU Southeast expected a drop due to the demographics. “We expected and knew that the demographics in this area wouldn’t support continued growth at that rate,” Crews said.

Center aims to gain license

The Children’s Center has been undergoing a few changes for this semester. Wanda Borrego, coordinator of the Children’s Center, said they are currently working toward becoming a state-licensed facility. “The Children’s Center is governed by the university, which in itself, is an entity,” Borrego said. “It was never a requirement for us to be state licensed. The university thought it would be more secure for us to have a second governing body.”

Website recruits for false position

Notehall.com, a website that buys and sells class notes, has been recruiting IUS students as note-takers. However, the students participating in this have misrepresented IU Southeast and violated the Student Code of Conduct by selling notes and handouts. Seuth Chaleunphonh, dean of students and director of Campus Life, said IU Southeast is bringing out awareness of this issue before it becomes a bigger problem.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade Bardstown Road

Hundreds of people gathered in Louisville on Bardstown Road for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which took place on March 10. The streets were flooded with green while families and people of all ages gathered to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The theme of the parade was Shamrocks and Shillelaghs.

Ben & Jerry’s co-founder churns up discussion

Jerry Greenfield, co-owner of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, spoke about his multi-million dollar business at IU Southeast in the Ogle Center on Feb. 21. Greenfield was the keynote speaker as a part of IU Southeast’s Sanders Speaker Series. Judge Carlton and Sue Sanders have donated $568,140 to the IU Southeast business school. Of that amount, $300,000 went to the Sanders Speaker Series and the remaining money went to establishing the Sanders Trading Lab.
