Center fielder receives honor, shares personal goals

Mychal Harris, communications junior, was named the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Week on March 12. KIAC is made up of five teams: Brescia, IU Southeast, Asbury, Berea and Alice Lloyd. Benjamin Reel, IUS baseball head coach, has been working with Harris for two years.

Lost and Found Sale finds treasure for scholarships

The Lost and Found Sale was held on March 19 in the Hoosier Room. A variety of unclaimed items were for sale, including USB drives, clothing, umbrellas, glasses, jewelry, books, lunch boxes and electronic devices. This is an event that occurs once per semester, and sale profits go toward aiding students.

Clean-up follows tornado

Chris Noonan, criminal justice junior, has been volunteering in Henryville since the tornado hit, in what he said was an organized disaster. Noonan was in Charlestown when the tornado happened and said he could see the huge funnel as it hit Henryville. “When I heard the high school was hit, my heart sank,” Noonan said. “I heard 30 to 40 students were still in the high school, and I was shocked. That sums up my emotions before I got there.”

BFA student publishes art

Chris Little, fine arts senior, is making his mark in the art world with his works featured on the web, shows and in magazines, both locally and internationally. Little has a concentration in ceramics and new media, and, after seven semesters at IU Southeast, he will be graduating this spring. Mainly working with photography, ceramics and new media — art that is accessible anytime, anywhere on majority of digital devices — Little’s artwork is spread out between online publications, print and shows. He promotes his artwork through communication outlets, such as his personal website, Tumblr, Facebook, Flickr, Vimeo and Twitter.

Student compares Russian culture to US

Irena Sokolova, international studies senior, has made an impact in local sports and plans to make her mark politically in the U.S. Sokolova is a Russian native from Moscow where she lived until she was 14 years old. In 2003, she moved to Indiana with her mother and stepfather. “I moved to Jeffersonville first,” Sokolova said. “In my city, we have 12 million people, so we have a lot of public transportation. When I first moved here, I felt like I was trapped.”

Students craft ceramics for creative animal show

An art exhibition, “The Animals in Us Part II” opened on Feb. 11 in New Albany and is on display till March 16 to the public. This art exhibit features animal related artwork and writing by local artists from Southern Indiana and Kentucky. The event is being held in the Resch — the former Gas and Electric Building. “I went to check out the exhibit last week,” Chris Little, fine arts senior, said. “I really liked the sculptures and the variety of artwork.”

Open session offers candidate feedback

Residence Life and Housing is currently conducting a search to find a new director. In order to receive opinions from student residents, several open sessions were held in order to provide feedback about the candidates. Currently, there are three candidates seeking the position — Amanda Stonecipher, Scott Iverson and Matthew Kerch. Stonecipher spoke at an open session on Feb. 6, while Kerch spoke on Feb. 9. Iverson’s open session was on Feb. 8.

Academy announces diversity publication

The Diversity Academy published its first issue of “Transformations,” a magazine explaining the functions of the academy and the fellowships and faculty learning communities available to IUS faculty. “The Diversity Academy is an academic affairs system for supporting faculty teaching, research and service in broad area of diversity,” Annette Wyandotte, interim associate vice chancellor of Academic Affairs and magazine editor, said. The IUS mission statement defines diversity as characteristics, such as age, ethnicity, gender, marital status, religion and sexual orientation.

Guest speaker cautions against climate change

Guest speaker Jim Chen, dean and professor of law at the University of Louisville, discussed "Three Faces of Climate Change Law in the United States" at IU Southeast on Jan. 26. Chen spoke about ways that U.S. citizens can take action toward climate change problems using three recent case studies to provide examples. “I really enjoyed that the event was sociable,” Justin Levesque, psychology student, said. “It was also very individualized. My philosophy professor told me about this event.”
