Baseless fears shape ideas

IUS Horizon September 12, 2010
There is no stronger and destructive emotion than fear. The recent outpour of fear about religious intentions is not the result of bigots but, rather, well-meaning worriers. History proves it so. Even so, I have a feeling that when the Founding Fathers wrote about freedom of religion they weren’t messing with us. Considering the fact that America was created due, in part, to the idea of religious freedom, it’s dumb-founding to think that we are still conversing in terms of religious freedom and discrimination against minority religions.

Press on: Determination on the campaign trail

IUS Horizon September 12, 2010
Getting involved in local politics can be a grueling experience, but it’s fascinating at the same time. In the fall, I was asked to come aboard the Clark County auditor campaign. My candidate, Janis Caldwell, has been a friend of my family for some time, so naturally I told her I would help her campaign. In my mind, I envisioned campaigning would be fairly easy — put up a few signs, start a Facebook page and perhaps go to a few events.

Surface PC cuts into activities, education

IUS Horizon September 5, 2010
A new Microsoft Surface tabletop computer was placed in the University Grounds Coffee Shop during the summer. It’s an interactive touch-based computer that doesn’t use a keyboard or mouse. It’s a neat device. It allows you to grab digital content with your hands and move objects with simple gestures and touches. It uses cameras and image recognition in the infrared spectrum to recognize different types of objects. The problem is the price tag. It cost the university about $15,000 to buy this one computer.

Ready for some football

IUS Horizon September 5, 2010
The NFL regular season kicks off Thursday, Sept. 9, with a rematch of last season’s NFC Championship game between the New Orleans Saints and the Minnesota Vikings. I, for one, could not be more excited. The Saints won that game, advancing to the first Super Bowl in franchise history and went on to defeat the Indianapolis Colts to win Super Bowl XLIV. That’s what’s so exciting about the NFL. You never really know what’s going to happen.

Serve some respect to servers for efforts

IUS Horizon September 5, 2010
As a student, money is hard to come by. We all have ways of making ends meet so we can afford our school books, pay our bills and somehow make it through the semester. Let’s face it — most of us have to have part-time jobs because financial aid can’t cover everything. I’ve worked in the restaurant business for four years as a server and, personally, it is a challenging job.

Discrimination not left in past; still relevant

IUS Horizon August 22, 2010
Since Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington D.C. more than 40 years ago, you’d think people would open up to accepting one another. This new American society proves to be more disconnected with King’s message than ever before. With faith, generations, race and even the first African-American president being elected, one would assume prejudices are slowly fading.

Horizon editor offers tips to improve your time at IUS

IUS Horizon August 22, 2010

I would like to start by saying welcome to the freshmen and transfer students to IU Southeast and “welcome back” to the returning students. This is my second year at IU Southeast, and, after two...

Judicial system has flaws; deal with it

IUS Horizon August 22, 2010
Many people within the prison walls will say the system is stacked against them, while some on the outside will argue it’s built to their advantage. Fortunately, it’s not designed for either. It’s built to protect our republic and make it extremely difficult for the innocent to suffer. Sometimes people who may seem guilty are not convicted for one reason or another, but it’s part of our system. It happens. Get over it.

No fond farewell included below

IUS Horizon April 18, 2010
In the past, it’s been a Horizon tradition to write a farewell column and remember certain events that happened during our time as editors. I’m breaking ranks and refusing to write such a column.

Final farewell for friends, Faux Pas

IUS Horizon April 18, 2010
Sometimes saying goodbye to an old friend is the hardest thing you will have to do. This week marks my final issue as an editor and contributor to The Horizon, and I have to admit it’s been a long time coming.

No excuses

IUS Horizon April 18, 2010
Well, this is it — my final column for The Horizon. I have to admit typing this column is bittersweet.
