SGA discusses Internet service

During the Jan. 28 Student Government Association meeting, two students vented frustrations about the lack of Internet service in the residence halls. Kathryn Haymon, psychology freshman, and Daniel Murray, philosophy freshman, were upset about being unable to receive Internet access in their lodges.

Meade County students receive in-state tuition

Meade County, Ky., joined tuition reciprocity in December 2009, making it eligible for in-state tuition at IU Southeast. Located west of Louisville, Meade County is the fifth county in Kentucky to be included in tuition reciprocity, joining Jefferson, Bullitt, Oldham and Trimble Counties.

Students change e-mail to Imail, Umail

Last semester, students received an e-mail saying the campus was switching their student e-mail from Webmail to either Imail or Umail. This change was enforced throughout all IU campuses. The change, which occurred in November, is part of IU Bloomington’s plan to give students better e-mail and more choices.

Smoking reinforcement policy still not approved

A Tobacco-Free Policy Task Force met in November 2009 to review the policy that was approved in 2007 and to look at proposed changes. As of August 2007, all sale and use of tobacco products on university property was banned. Students or university employees are allowed to smoke in their cars, but are otherwise prohibited from smoking.

Housing survey evaluates program

Residence Life launched a national housing survey from November through December 2009 to assess student satisfaction with the program. The purpose of the survey, called the ACUHO-I/EBI Resident Assessment, was to provide insight into resident perceptions and help Residence Life identify strengths and areas of improvement.

SGA president proposes peanut butter project

Possible relief efforts for the earthquake in Haiti were mentioned at the Student Government Association meeting on Thursday, Jan. 21. SGA president James Bonsall suggested a peanut butter project that could be easily donated by students around campus. The SGA kicked off the spring semester by electing three new officers and planning a visit to the Indiana Statehouse.
