Local business delivers homemade pizza

Local business FX Pizza may be new to the Floyds Knobs, Ind., but it is already gaining support among residents. FX Pizza opened on Aug. 1, and it has become popular among local residents. Support from Floyd Central High School organizations, as well as other media coverage, has helped this business take off. Brothers Mark and Gerry Newton co-own FX Pizza, located on Old Vincennes Road in Floyds Knobs. FX Pizza is a delivery and carry-out only business.

Students share thrilling ’80s theme party

More than 150 students were met with the hit song “Thriller” by Michael Jackson upon entering the Hoosier Room on Sept. 15. The room was donned with brightly colored nylons, poufy hair and leg warmers to mark the annual ’80s Night event held by Residence Life and Housing. The Hoosier Room was filled with streamers, balloons and cardboard character cutouts, including Princess Leia from “Star Wars” and Freddy Kreuger from “Nightmare on Elm Street.” The large screen at the front of the room played music videos of Madonna, as well as the movie “Grease” via YouTube. Jen Crompton, associate director of Residence Life, welcomed students at the door.

IUS celebrates 70 years of progress

As the fall semester begins and students return to campus for classes, the celebration of IU Southeast’s 70th anniversary will be commencing. Before IU Southeast covered 180 acres in New Albany and more than 7,000 students were enrolled, IU Southeast was a small, commuter campus located in downtown Jeffersonville. The original campus was created in 1941, with 291 students enrolled, four of those with full-time status.

More students, more dorms

It was a bittersweet event for the Garrett family during Move-in Day as they helped Haley Garrett, nursing freshman, move into her new dorm room in Forest Lodge during Move-In Day Aug. 25. This will be Haley’s first time living on her own and apart from her home — about one hour away in Hanover, Ind. “It’s sad to see her go, but she’s 19,” Kenny Garrett, Haley Garrett’s father, said. “It’s time for her to go.”

Local café provides more than coffee

A new local coffee shop has made a home and a statement on Grant Line Road in New Albany. With a focus on local, organic, anti-animal cruelty and fair trade, Stacie Bale, owner of Earth Friends Café, is providing more than a receipt to customers. “I have high standards, not high profit and greediness,” Bale said. “We’re not trying to be the next McDonalds.”

Graduating class largest in history

IU Southeast hosted a commencement ceremony for the largest graduating class in the history of the university on May 9. Students, parents, faculty and staff crowded by the amphitheater behind Knobview Hall to celebrate the end of one phase and the beginning of another. There were 1,104 students who graduated with IU degrees — 47 with degrees in partnership with Purdue — for a total of 1,151 graduates. Of those students, 63 percent were female and 16 percent were a minority.

IUS turns up heat with summer classes

While some students traveled or worked during the summer break, others were continuing their academic pursuits and enrolling in summer classes for the two available sessions. For the summer session I, 2,532 students were enrolled while 2,249 enrolled in summer session II. The summer season is split into two academic sessions, with each session lasting for about six weeks.
