The Student Government Association talked about the SGA president’s address to the students on Oct. 20.
Josh Kornberg, communications senior and SGA president, spoke for the State of the Student Body Address on Oct. 28 at noon in The Commons.
“The address is going to be a hot mess,” Kornberg said. “The Chick-fil-A cow is going to be there, and a lot of the administration will be, as well.”
Kevin Evans, secondary education junior and SGA vice president, said he worked on getting local companies to come and sponsor the event.
“We have Graeters Ice Cream coming and giving away free ice cream for it,” Evans said. “Chick-fil-A will be there giving away coupons for free chicken and some other places, as well. It’s going to be a good thing.”
Stephon Moore, journalism freshman and SGA press secretary, said he thought the SGA should have a presence at the address.
“I think it would be good for us to support our president,” Moore said. “We should look professional for it also— no sweatshirts or jeans or anything like that. We have an image.”
Involvement Award
Kornberg gave an involvement award to the IUS volleyball team for their involvement on campus.
“They have gotten really involved,” Kornberg said. “I have been trying to go to a lot of the sport’s games here on campus but, with all my meetings, I haven’t been able to.”
Joe Glover, athletic director, said he was glad Kornberg gave the team this award.
“I know the girls work really hard to play,” Glover said. “I want all of [SGA} to know that anytime [they] need anything a presentation, or whatever I can do, my door is open. [I thank the SGA] for giving the team this award.”
Matt Owen, political science junior and SGA senate chair, said he asked Kornberg how the picture frames for the involvement awards were being funded.
“Which fund or funds are the picture frames coming from” Owen said. “And how much is being spent on them?”
Kornberg said he is using his Procurement card to purchase the frames.
“I thought that was what I was supposed to be doing,” Kornberg said. “I’ve been looking at other ways to pay for them outside the budget. They are only $ 1.50, so it’s not like I’m making it rain with these picture frames. The P-card is like a campus credit card, except it’s only used for organizations funded by Campus Life and since we get our budget from Student Activity Fees that applies to us.”
Kornberg said he bought five picture frames.
SGA Treasurer Resigns
Jennifer Broadus, general studies junior and SGA treasurer, said she is going to resign her position at the end of the semester.
“I don’t really want to announce my resignation this early,” Broadus said. “However, I have been offered a position [at Disney World] in Florida. I would like to know if any of the senators would like step up and take it so I have time to train [them], it’s not a hard job just a lot of work.”
Broadus said she was offered a position in attractions and could not refuse it. Broadus has been a member of the SGA for three years.
Evans said he is very sad to see her leave the SGA.
“It’s going to be a big loss for our organization,” Evans said. “She is one of our best senators, and losing her as our treasurer is really going to hurt us. We won’t have anyone who can balance our budget quite the same.”
Proposed Changes
Kornberg discussed nominating a new executive position.
“This position would allow the SGA to help support the Athletics Department,” Kornberg said.
Evans also talked about changes he is working on which will be set up through administration.
“We’re working on getting a program together to make syllabuses available before the class starts,” Evans said. “I’ve been working with [Gilbert Atnip, vice chancellor of Academic Affairs], and we’re going to forward a policy for it. The hardest part is going to be getting the faculty retrained on OnCourse.”
Kornberg also talked about a walking path he is working on getting started.
“I have been working with administration on getting a walking path put onto campus,” Kornberg said. “It will help the SGA’s goal of student retention though student involvement, and it will also help commemorate the 70th year anniversary.”
Kornberg also said the walking path would be more trivial based — there would be a sign that had a question on it, and there would be an answer on the back or underneath the question.
“It would just be temporary yard signs when it goes up,” Kornberg said. “Hopefully, it’ll be done in the spring and more permanent, as well.”
Posters and Pushcards
Moore discussed making posters and cards for the SGA.
“I’ve been working on a [22-by-28] poster with information about the SGA,” Moore said. “I would also like to get some push cards printed with each senator’s contact information on the back so we can hand it out to the students in First-Year Seminar.”
Josh Sesar, math and physics junior and SGA senator, said he told Moore if he wanted the senators’ contact information on it he would have to have the cards be reprinted each semester.
“If [Moore] wants to do that then it’s fine,” Sesar said. “[He will] have to request for it in the budget each year.”
Moore also said Dulguun Otgonsuren, undecided sophomore and SGA secretary, is taking pictures of each senator for the SGA’s bulletin board.
“We’ll be putting the pictures up on the bulletin boards in University Center and in Crestview Hall,” Moore said.
