The Student Government Association conducted their first meeting of the semester on Sept. 1 in the University Center North, room 127.
Josh Kornberg, communications senior and SGA president, nominated Brian Crider, secondary education sophomore, for the position of internal and external secretary.
“[Bryan and I] have become pretty close over the past few weeks, and I believe he can handle the duties,” Kornberg said.
Kornberg said the position is not new but it has been vacant for some time.
“He follows up on committee chairs — students I have appointed to each committee — and the students to make sure they are getting good info,” Kornberg said.
During the meeting, the SGA passed an amendment which would move the student forum and senator comments toward the beginning of the session instead of at the end. The forum allows senators to yield their time to a student if they chose to.
“Senators were getting distracted, so we moved the student forum next to senator comments for fluidity,” Kornberg said.
The SGA also brought up another amendment that would require certain attire for the senators during the meetings. This issue will be discussed at their next session on Sept. 8.
Matt Owen, political science junior and SGA senate chair, said he thought it was important the senate dress more professionally.
“This would set more of a professional standard — no flip flops, jeans or T-shirts,” Owen said. “It would help us look and be more professional.”
Kornberg said this change would give the appearance of a more professional atmosphere.
“We need to dress for the part and look the part,” Kornberg said. “This will create a positive image for the students.”
The SGA also discussed three unfilled offices positions.
“I would really like to see someone who is already here to take it,” Owen said. “You can either step up or — I hate to say — but what are you doing here?”
There will be a nomination committee composed of a group of senators that will meet to find individuals who are interested in filling the open spots. This will take place on Sept. 20.
Kornberg said he hopes in the next couple of weeks to bring in 10 to 12 senators.
“At that point, we will lay out clear expectations,” Kornberg said. “We will be active and do things with our time.”
