More than 560 members of IU Southeast and the community attended the Chancellor’s Medallion Dinner to honor three students with scholarships and two community service leaders.
Since 1994, the dinner has been held annually to raise money for student scholarships, but it also serves a purpose by honoring community activism.
“The Medallion Dinner is a public opportunity for IU Southeast to thank the community,” Rose Wathen, vice president and co-chair of the Medallion Committee, said.
Located at Horseshoe Southern Indiana Casino and Hotel, the dinner, which also had a silent auction, was sold out.
Crystal Gunther, banking officer and co-chair of the Medallion Committee, said she is proud of the Chancellor’s Medallion Dinner turn-out this year.
“This is definitely the event that a lot of people look forward to coming to every year,” Gunther said.
Chancellor Sandra Patterson-Randles said the medallion is awarded to community members who have proven their dedication and leadership in the community.
One medallion was given to Jack Koetter, CEO of The Koetter Group, which Patterson-Randles described as a construction company that has provided jobs for many people in Southern Indiana.
The second Medallion was given to Jim Morris, former IUS basketball coach and the first athletic director at IU Southeast.
Patterson-Randles said there is always an auction before the dinner, which serves as another way to raise money for scholarships for students.
Three Chancellor’s Medallion Leadership Scholarships were given to IUS students to honor academic achievement and community service — Mark Bickers, biology senior, Francisco Javier Martin Munoz, graphic design senior, and Woody Zorn, secondary education senior.
“All three students are shining examples of the IU Southeast student body,” Patterson-Randles said. “Their active engagement and dedication serves as an excellent indicator that they will be still leading, serving and bettering our community long after graduation.”
