The Student Government Association discussed ways to improve student interaction during the meeting on Oct. 7.
Student body and SGA president Amanda Denbo, business senior, attended the IU Board of Trustees meeting on Oct. 1 along with SGA senator Yana Baker, political science freshman.
Denbo said the SGA at IU Bloomington is having similar problems interacting with their students.
“I think it would be interesting to see the kinds of things they come up with to become more involved with their student body,” she said.
Baker also said IU is looking into having a two- or three-day fall break.
“They talked about starting school a week earlier in August,” Baker said.
Denbo also introduced the possibility of a “Survivor Day” for the students, a mock-up of the popular television show. Denbo was given the idea from SGA senator James Bonsall, business management senior and former SGA president.
“There would be an obstacle course, a Slip ’N Slide, a puzzle they would have to put together and — I know it sounds gross — but an Eat the Animal, with those spiders you can find around at this time of year,” Denbo said.
The “Survivor Day” would work hand-in-hand with a new scholarship Denbo is working to set up for the students.
“This is a really good opportunity for us to help students so they don’t have to worry about how they’re going pay for their schooling,” she said. “It’s something I’m really passionate about.”
In addition, Denbo asked the SGA members to consider forming a football team to help unite the organization.
The SGA also voted in Aaron Neely, psychology sophomore and president of the Student Veterans Organization, as the SGA executive secretary.
“Most people come to college and learn how to be a leader,” Dendo said. “Aaron learned all of that in the Navy. He’s incredibly bright and has been a huge help when we’re stuck for ideas.”
Jennifer Broadus, education junior, was also sworn back into the organization as a full senator.
Broadus has held numerous positions in the organization, including secretary, pro temp and treasurer.
Denbo was among many to offer support in overlooking some of the SGA bylaws to allow Broadus come in as a full senator.
