Spanish Club livens up fiesta

The Spanish Club hosted their first event this semester. A fiesta was held in honor of Day of the Living in the Game Room on Nov. 17. Alexina Wilson, Spanish junior and president of the Spanish Club, said their Day of the Living fiesta was just a play on the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead. “The holiday is meant for gatherings of family and friends to remember loved ones who have died,” Wilson said.

Too much to handle: Grenadiers dominate with duct tape

The No. 24 ranked IUS men’s basketball team defeated Purdue University Calumet Peregrines, 88-71, on Nov. 11. This was the third annual Indiana University and Purdue University Challenge. This was the Grenadiers third win in a row, and they remained undefeated through three games at home.

Seasons begin with No. 1 ranking

The IUS men’s and women’s basketball teams were recently ranked No. 1 in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference coaches’ polls. Both teams finished the 2010-11 season with winning records of 26-7 and 21-11. Each team has a history of success in conference and regular season victories, and Joe Glover, athletic director, said he predicts this season will be no different. “I was really thrilled to see the rank of both teams as preseason No. 1,” Glover said. “It was no surprise. They work really hard, and it’s really a testament to the coaching staff and the players for all their hard work.”

Wares of the World returns to IUS

The Hoosier Room was filled with the sound of music and cultural crafts on Oct. 24 and 25 to mark the sixth annual Wares of the World event. The Wares of the World was hosted by the International Programs and featured handmade jewelry, personal accessories, home décor, art and sculptures. These items were handcrafted to reflect the cultures of Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.

Goblins gobble goodies at silent auction

The IUS Staff Council had its sixth annual silent auction with this year’s event having a Halloween theme, titled Goblins, Gobblers and Goodies, on Oct. 25 in the Hoosier Room. Open bidding started at 10 a.m., and attendees had until 3 p.m. to view and declare their price for items on display while coffee and refreshments were served. Alice Watson, vice president of the IUS Staff Council, said all items up for bid were donated either from staff members or local businesses, and all the proceeds were going to the IUS Staff Council.

Former Grenadier signs contract with NBL

Rick Bodiford, former Grenadier guard, signed his first professional contract with the Quebec Kebs of the National Basketball League of Canada. Bodiford graduated from Eastern High School in Middletown, Ky., in 2005 and went on to play for the Grenadiers from 2005 to 2007 and from 2009 to 2011. The 6-foot-4-inch guard is No. 8 on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,400 points. He finished with 583 rebounds and 170 assists, making the KIAC All-Conference team last season.

Blueprint hopes to increase graduation rates

The six regional campuses of Indiana University recently released the Blueprint for Student Attainment. The 128-paged document, was released earlier this month, and it outlines a strategic plan set forth by the campuses to help students reach graduation at the regional campuses. “Ultimately, the blueprint is about enhancing services for students,” Chancellor Sandra Patterson-Randles said. “We want students to stay in school, and we want them to persist to graduation. This is all really about student benefit.”

Grenadiers achieve revenge on Eagles

The IUS volleyball team defeated the Cincinnati Christian University Eagles in three sets in the Activities Building on Oct. 4. The Grenadiers lost their previous match at CCU, 3-2, on Sept. 13. “[The players] just wanted revenge this time,” Lesley Drury Prather, IUS volleyball head coach, said.

Grenadiers triumphant over Lady Oaks

The IUS women’s tennis team took home a big victory against the Oakland City University Lady Oaks on Sept. 29. The Grenadiers dropped one match, bringing their final score to 8-1. “Coming into the match, we knew that we’ve beaten teams they had lost to, so we knew we should win,” Emily McGrath, international studies junior, said.

Local business delivers homemade pizza

Local business FX Pizza may be new to the Floyds Knobs, Ind., but it is already gaining support among residents. FX Pizza opened on Aug. 1, and it has become popular among local residents. Support from Floyd Central High School organizations, as well as other media coverage, has helped this business take off. Brothers Mark and Gerry Newton co-own FX Pizza, located on Old Vincennes Road in Floyds Knobs. FX Pizza is a delivery and carry-out only business.
