SAF plummets for new school year

For the first time since 2004, the Student Activity Fee took a significant drop, with 11 percent of the budget being cut from the total amount. The SAF is a fee all students must pay and is determined per credit hour for up to 12 credit hours. This year, the budget for the SAF totaled $742,852 compared to last year’s $828,452 — a more than $85,000 difference. Anne Skuce, interim vice chancellor of Student Affairs, said the decrease was due to not only low enrollment rates in the spring, but also the discount on summer tuition this year.

Grenadiers celebrate Night at Louisville Bats

The Louisville Slugger Field welcomed past, present and future Grenadiers to enjoy America’s favorite past time on July 20. The IU Southeast Alumni Association hosted the third annual Night at the Louisville Bats. Tickets for the event cost $5 and included admission into the game, a voucher for a free hot dog, soda, popcorn and a T-shirt. The Alumni Association sold out tickets for the event, totaling in approximately 300 tickets.

IUS distinguishes diversity

IU Southeast student leaders gathered along with other faculty and staff members for a Spring Diversity Town Hall meeting on April 3. The purpose of the meeting was to target and approach the results from the diversity survey taken last semester, as well as if there were significant changes and how the can be addressed. Issues such as sexual harassment, discrimination and social media were brought up. Students shared their personal experiences and thoughts while others came up with different suggestions on how to prevent such issues.

Organization inspires hope in students

AIDS Interfaith Ministries of Kentuckiana visited IU Southeast on March 13 in an effort to educate students about AIDS and alert students to the services AIM provides AIDS patients. The mission of AIM is to help people affected by AIDS or HIV by providing various aspects of support. Some of the services AIM provides includes counseling, food pantry, free dinners, mentoring, workshops and retreats.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade Bardstown Road

Hundreds of people gathered in Louisville on Bardstown Road for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which took place on March 10. The streets were flooded with green while families and people of all ages gathered to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The theme of the parade was Shamrocks and Shillelaghs.

IUS impacts economy

According to the economic impact study released on Feb. 16, IU Southeast contributed $124.4 million to the local economy, including thousands of jobs. “The $124 million economic impact figure represents the direct spending of IUS in Indiana,” Mark Land, associate vice president for University Communications at Indiana University, said. “It has two components — direct spending and indirect or induced spending.Direct spending is for employee salaries and spending with vendors and companies in Indiana that serve the campus in some way. It also includes spending by students and visitors to the campus.” The entire Indiana University system, including all eight regional campuses and IU Health, impacted the economy with an $11.5 billion in the 2010-11 fiscal year.

Group tackles hackers

A new student organization focused on network security has surfaced on campus called the IU Southeast Computer Security Group. The goals of the group are to inform students about Internet computer threats, create new credit courses for computer security training on campus and attend competitions against other universities. Currently, the group has 17 members.

Internet receives research upgrade

IU Bloomington has launched a new high-speed Internet service for research and education, which is now available to IU Southeast. The new Monon100 network link is an Internet speed upgrade from 10 to 100 gigabytes per second, making it one of the fastest in the nation. The purpose of the upgrade is to expedite access to IU Bloomington’s super computer, or “Big Red,” in order to compute enormous volumes of data involved in certain types of research.

Scarce space creates need for new lodge

A sixth lodge will be built in August 2013 at IU Southeast to accommodate more students who want to live on campus. Currently, there are no vacancies in IU Southeast’s five other dorms. “We have space for 399 students to live on campus,” Jen Crompton, assistant director for Residence Life and Housing, said. “The new building will most likely be the same size as our larger buildings — Meadow, Orchard and Woodland — so it will hold 87 students.”

Professors predict primaries

The Republican primary season is underway as the United States heads toward the 2012 presidential election in November. To explain the primary process to students, a panel of five IUS professors held a lecture in the University Center on Jan. 31. The main topics discussed were primaries, caucuses and the general processes of public selection for political candidates. Within the rules decided by the Democratic and Republican Party committees, each state is free to choose their process of candidate selection. The two processes are primaries and caucuses.

Survey seeks to strengthen schools

Students in their first year, as well as seniors, are invited to participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement. The survey is sent to students through their IUS e-mail and comes out every three years. The survey is geared toward helping faculty and administrators improve college life for undergraduates. IU Southeast joins an estimated 600 other schools who will also participate. All other IU campuses, including Bloomington, will also be participating.
