Grenadiers picked to win KIAC tournament

The IUS men’s and women’s basketball teams both topped the coaches’ poll for the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 2012-13 season. Each coach in the division conference nominates the team they expect to win the conference tournament at the end of the season. The men’s team has won the KIAC tournament for the past five consecutive years, and the women’s team has won the past four years.

Sometimes in a competition, when a prize is thrown into a situation, typically all the things an athlete has learned about teamwork and camaraderie seem to be forgotten, and suddenly it becomes every person for his or herself. However, the IUS men’s and women’s basketball teams are now being looked at as an example of how a team should behave. Both teams at IU Southeast have won the Championship of Character award twice during the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

IUS set to host KIAC championship

The Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selected IU Southeast to host the semifinal and championship games this year. “I’m very honored to host the KIAC this year,” Joe Glover, athletic director, said. Previously, the KIAC was a Kentucky-school conference only, but it has now expanded to Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania, adding more teams to the competition throughout the years.

IUS women beat St. Louis

The IUS women’s basketball team brought home a win against St. Louis College of Pharmacy on, Feb. 25. The game was the first round of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. The Grenadiers never fell behind to the Eutectics and brought home the win with a final score of 87-21.

IUS men get over-confident

The IUS men’s basketball team played St. Louis College of Pharmacy during the first round of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on, Feb. 25. IU Southeast was ranked No. 14 in the tournament. The Grenadiers started out the first half slow. Both teams were close in points during most of the first half, but the St. Louis Eutectics were up by four.

Wiley Brown, IUS men’s basketball head coach, is considered an experienced athlete by his team, co-workers and his track record of playing both national and international basketball and football. “Coach Brown has led most of his players to success,” Joe Glover, athletic director, said. “He is a great fit for the program. He develops his players throughout their years here at IUS.” Since Brown joined the Grenadiers, he has led them to winning the KIAC regular season and post-season tournament four years in a row.

Seasons begin with No. 1 ranking

The IUS men’s and women’s basketball teams were recently ranked No. 1 in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference coaches’ polls. Both teams finished the 2010-11 season with winning records of 26-7 and 21-11. Each team has a history of success in conference and regular season victories, and Joe Glover, athletic director, said he predicts this season will be no different. “I was really thrilled to see the rank of both teams as preseason No. 1,” Glover said. “It was no surprise. They work really hard, and it’s really a testament to the coaching staff and the players for all their hard work.”
