SGA votes during executive session

The Student Government Association began their meeting 30 minutes late and went directly into executive session on Dec. 1. Executive sessions are when the senate votes to close the meeting to the community in order to discuss confirmation proceedings for nominees to SGA positions and disciplinary proceedings. Advisers may also privately address the senate. Stephen Prather, radiography junior and SGA pro-tempore, motioned to go into executive session for 15 minutes. “We need to discuss some protocol and proceedings,” Prather said.

SGA squabbles over Meet and Eat date

The Student Government Association held its meeting on Nov. 17 and swore in four new senators. The senators, Drew Apple, criminal justice and political science sophomore, Shanda Webb, special education freshman, Micaela Dale, business management and marketing junior, and Ashley Kern, secondary education freshman, were told to make two goals they wanted to accomplish as senators. One goal Apple came up with was having students who have a concealed carry license to be able to carry their weapons on campus. Webb said she would like to better organize the various parking lots.

SGA changes senator probationary period

The Student Government Association held its meeting on Nov. 3 by talking about the syllabus proposal that was taken to the Student Recruitment and Retention Committee on Oct. 30. The syllabus proposal would give faculty the means to put a syllabus onto OneStart before classes begin and encourage them to use the utility. Jay McTyier, program analyst for the Registrar, talked about how IU Southeast is technologically prepared to set up the proposal.

SGA president discusses new summer tuition prices

The Student Government Association held its State of the Student Body Address on Oct. 27 in The Commons at noon, where Josh Kornberg, communications senior and SGA president, discussed a range of topics. Kevin Evans, secondary education junior and SGA vice president, said the event started a little late because of some of the sponsors, and the cheerleaders were running behind. “Chick-fil-A is going to have their cow here,” Evans said. “We’re waiting for the dance team and the cheerleaders to show up, so we’re going to be slightly behind [schedule].”

The Student Government Association talked about the SGA president’s address to the students on Oct. 20. Josh Kornberg, communications senior and SGA president, spoke for the State of the Student Body Address on Oct. 28 at noon in The Commons. “The address is going to be a hot mess,” Kornberg said. “The Chick-fil-A cow is going to be there, and a lot of the administration will be, as well.”

SGA demands office supplies

The Student Government Association discussed restructuring its organization at the Oct. 13 meeting. On Oct. 5, the SGA talked about bringing in new senators by having the deans of each school select five students to be placed on a ballot, and the top two voted in by students would become senators. Matt Owen, political science junior and SGA senate chair, explained the way elections work now.

The Student Government Association had their meeting on Oct. 5 and swore in the probationary senators Stephon Moore, journalism freshman, and Brandon Smith, secondary education freshman. “It’s good to be a full senator,” Smith said. “I really want to be able to help other students.” Hannah Smith, sociology sophomore, was nominated for an associate justice position.

SGA fills more positions, reforms

The Student Government Association began their meeting on Sept. 29 by swearing in Ryan Miller, education junior, as a full-time senator. Normally, senators have to go through a two-week probationary period before they can become full senators. However, since Miller was a senator last fall, the SGA voted him in on Sept. 22. “I would like a motion to open elections for the tech officer position,” Josh Sesar, math junior and SGA senator, said.

Capabilities Walk has big turnout at IUS

The IUS ALLIES partnered with The Down Syndrome Support Association of Southern Indiana to present the third annual Celebrate Our Capabilities Walk on Saturday, Sept. 17. ALLIES is a student group whose goal is to create alliances in the community to increase awareness of Down syndrome and other disabilities and the walk is held every year. Rachel McComb said it’s a good experience for her daughter, Jenni Armour.

SGA moves bill to emergency status

The Student Government Association started their meeting on Sept. 15 by deciding on a new secretary. Dulguun Otgonsuren, undecided sophomore, was nominated for the position and voted in as the SGA secretary. “I looked over the description, and it’s something I could do,” Otgonsuren said. “I just wanted to step up.”
