Reptiles swarm on to campus

Snakes, lizards and other reptiles crawled into the Hoosier Room at IU Southeast during “Herps Alive!” The program educated children in the Kentuckiana area by raising awareness of reptiles and amphibians. Using money from the student activity fee, Herps Alive is an annual event on campus organized by the Children’s Hour — a series of programs at IU Southeast for children.

Halloween Horrorfest occurs at drive-in

Horror lovers in the Kentuckiana area came to the annual Halloween Horrorfest at the Georgetown Drive-in to celebrate the holiday with a classic horror movie night. Vampires and masked monsters roamed the drive-in before the shows, ate “the secret’s in the meat” chili and observed the Halloween decorations. Chain saws were placed around the main area, and blood splattered the walls of the snack bar.

Campus welcomes bluegrass quartet

The Alison Brown Quartet performed the first concert in the Different Drummer Series this season at the Ogle Center. The quartet incorporates the banjo, acoustic guitar, drum and bass —without lyrics — to entertain the audience with a unique blend of music. Larry Atamanuik, drummer, described the music.

IUS Softball beats alumni

Former IUS softball players reunited to compete against the 2010 IUS Softball team at the Koetter Sports Softball Complex on Oct. 2. “This was a way for previous players to come back and enjoy softball again,” IUS head coach Todd Buckingham said. “I haven’t seen a lot of these girls in years. It was a surprise to see all of them on the field.” Many of the former players were members of the first-ever IUS Softball team.

IUS serves Mountain State

The IUS Volleyball team defeated Mountain State University in the first match of three in the Activities Building on Saturday, Sept. 25. The Grenadiers won the last three games of the match, bringing the Grenadiers’ record to 9-7 for the season. IU Southeast fought in the first game, ultimately losing 25-22.

Serbian student hopes to live in New York

Igor Vuckovic, business finance sophomore, moved from Belgrade, Serbia, to attend IU Southeast in January 2009. “I came here to experience new culture, to meet new people,” Vuckovic said. He lives with his sister, Lana, who moved here in 2000. Vuckovic said his degree will give him many opportunities for work in the future.

New director to improve campus experiences

Joshua DeWar, the new director of Residence Life and Housing, said he has improvements planned to keep students involved on campus. DeWar’s first day as director was May 24, and he has been particularly busy since move-in day. He said the lodges are currently full, and his biggest challenge so far has been getting to know all the students. He said he wants to be a part of the students’ experience in the lodges.
