Senior tennis player recognized for athletics, academics by NAIA

During college, time can be perceived as a jugling act. School, work and athletics can create a full work load. Some students can crack under the pressure — while others thrive in it. For tennis player Abby Enteman, accounting and finance senior, being awarded one of Daktronics-NAIA Women’s Tennis Scholars of 2010 let her know which group she was in. “I do work hard to keep up with everything,” Enteman said.

Women’s Tennis earns preseason No. 1 ranking

The Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s preseason coaches’ polls were announced for fall sports, and the IUS women’s tennis team was chosen as the preseason No. 1 team. The preseason ranking came as no surprise to the IUS athletic staff, coaches and players. “Since we won conference last year, we seemed like the natural choice,” Jenni Walters, women’s tennis head coach, said.

Athletic director leaves; spot filled

The IUS Athletic Department is now under the control of interim athletic director Joe Glover. Glover, previously the assistant athletic director, takes on the new role after the resignation of former athletic director Pat Mrozowski. Mrozowski is now the athletic director at Brescia University. Glover grew up in New Albany and attended New Albany High School. Glover said he always had a love of sports and realized he wanted to work in the field in junior high.

Baseball player drafted by Kansas City Royals

Many professional baseball players grow up playing the game their entire lives. They start in Little League, play through junior high and high school, then either get drafted and begin a professional career or continue to play in college. Cameron Conner, general studies junior, took a less traditional path to a professional baseball career, but found a career nonetheless. He was drafted by the Kansas City Royals with the 599th overall pick in the 2010 Major League Baseball first-year player draft on June 8.

IUS volleyball looks to bounce back, improve on last season

This upcoming season for IUS women’s volleyball has those who remember last year, which was derailed by a swine flu outbreak on the team, thinking about redemption. Lesley Drury-Prather, IUS head Volleyball coach, said the four cases of swine flu the team experienced last year cost players a chance at going to the national tournament, awarded to the winner of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament.

Softball team splits doubleheader with Brescia

The IUS softball team split a doubleheader against the Brescia University on Saturday, April 10, at the Koetter Sports Complex. The Grenadiers started slow in the first game. Brescia jumped ahead, posting five runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Senior pitcher puts together solid campaign during his final season

Adam Lipke, general studies senior, was named Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 22 to March 28. He gained the title after pitching a complete game shutout in a 6-0 win against Asbury College on March 27. Lipke struck out eight batters and surrendered only four hits during the game. This is the first time he has earned the award this season.

IUS cheerleaders win second-straight title

The IU Southeast cheerleaders captured their second-consecutive national championship on Saturday, March 20. The team traveled to Myrtle Beach, S.C., to compete in the All-Girl Medium Collegiate Division in the Cheer Ltd. Open College Nationals. There were only three teams in IU Southeast’s division, but their overall score beat 17 other teams at the competition.

Sophomore tennis player named KIAC Player of the Week

The IUS men’s tennis team picked up their first individual award of the season following the week of March 29 when sophomore Kevin Sacksteder was named the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week. Sacksteder won both of his matches against Asbury College, winning with teammate Matt Coomer, Spanish junior, in their doubles match and also winning his singles match.
