Fans get look at this year’s Grenadiers

IUS students and fans recently filled the Activities Building to catch a glimpse of both the IUS Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams during the annual Cream and Crimson games. The Cream and Crimson games are intrasquad scrimmages where both the men’s and women’s teams are split into two teams and play each other. Each team plays one 20-minute half.

Grenadiers cede lead, lose first game at buzzer

The IUS Men’s Basketball team lost its season opener 85-83 in dramatic fashion against St. Catharine College on Nov. 2 in the Activities Building. The Grenadiers had a 21-point lead at halftime and lost the game on a last-second shot by the Patriots. “It was a good test to prepare us for the end of the year, and we will learn from this game,” Wiley Brown, IUS Men’s Basketball head coach, said.

Grenadiers raise money

The IUS Baseball players will be participating in fundraising for their upcoming baseball season. Each new player is asked to raise $1,500 per season and returning players are asked to raise $1,000. This supplements the money given to the team by the Student Life Committee each year. Last year, the SLC allocated $34,000 for the baseball team.

Lady Trailblazers cut through Grenadiers

The IUS Women’s Basketball team had its first scrimmage of the season against visiting Vincennes University on Oct. 20 in the Activities Building. The scrimmage consisted of two 20-minute halves, with a five-minute halftime. Vincennes University won both halves by a score of 38-22 in the first half and 42-30 in the second half of the scrimmage.

3-on-3 basketball comes to an end

Intramural sports are up and running this season. On Oct. 14, “Pike 2” played “The Bros” in the Activities Building. The final score of the game was 11-9, with “The Bros” winning. Many supporters and fans were in attendance for the game. “We went to all of the games last year, too,” Darcey Terry, elementary education junior, said.

The IUS Volleyball team was defeated by Lindsey Wilson College in a dramatic four set match on Tuesday, Oct. 12, in the Activities Building. The Grenadiers lost their final home match for the season 19-25, 25-21, 15-25 and 28-30. The loss drops IU Southeast to 14-11 for the season.

Passion drives softball coach

Todd Buckingham, IUS Softball head coach, is now heading into his fifth season with the Grenadiers. Before coaching at IU Southeast, Buckingham coached for five years at Bluefield State College in Bluefield, W. Va. Aside from coaching softball at Bluefield State College, Buckingham also coached women’s tennis, as well as being an assistant coach for the women’s and men’s basketball teams for one year.

Grenadiers bring down Mighty Oaks

Despite facing adversity, the IUS Volleyball team defeated Oakland City University on Oct. 5 in the Activities Building. The Grenadiers lost Lindsey Ragland, sophomore right-side hitter, due to illness and hospitalization just two hours before the match. Despite the unexpected lineup change, the Grenadiers defeated the Mighty Oaks 25-20, 25-13, 25-18 and 25-18. The win takes the Grenadiers to 13-9 for the season.

IUS Softball beats alumni

Former IUS softball players reunited to compete against the 2010 IUS Softball team at the Koetter Sports Softball Complex on Oct. 2. “This was a way for previous players to come back and enjoy softball again,” IUS head coach Todd Buckingham said. “I haven’t seen a lot of these girls in years. It was a surprise to see all of them on the field.” Many of the former players were members of the first-ever IUS Softball team.

Flag football breeds competition, comraderie

The IUS Intramural Flag Football League gathered to play its second week of games on Oct. 2. This year, the Intramural Flag Football League has 13 men’s teams, four co-ed teams and three women’s teams. Perry Brown, head of intramural sports and fitness center coordinator, started the Intramural Flag Football League in 2006. “This is the first year we were able to have a women’s team,” Brown said. “In the past, we were able to accumulate one team but never another to be able to play them. This year, we were able to gather up three women’s teams and co-ed teams.”
