New CIO expects changes

From having many years of experience in the field of technology to raising four daughters with his wife of 40 years, Tom Sawyer, chief information officer, said he feels right at home in his new position at IU Southeast. “The environment here is just conducive to learning,” Sawyer said. “I love the way [the faculty] care about the students. It makes me feel good, like we’re doing something right.” Sawyer said his job consists of taking care of the technology needs of the university.

Passion leads professor to dean position

On July 1, Samantha Early, the new dean of the School of Arts and Letters, took office. Prior to her position as dean, Early was an associate professor and coordinator for the IUS Department of English. Early began her career at IU Southeast in August 1999, where she utilized her specialty in African-American literature.

New dean anticipates changes for Social Sciences

Joe Wert, the new dean of the School of Social Sciences, was recently promoted to his new position as dean. He took office on Aug. 2. Due to his previous administrative experience, Wert decided to take the position as dean. “I was the coordinator of the Political Science Department for about seven years,” Wert said. “I was also a part of the faculty senate for two years. I like that kind of role and the abilities I have to be of service to the School of Social Sciences.

New director to improve campus experiences

Joshua DeWar, the new director of Residence Life and Housing, said he has improvements planned to keep students involved on campus. DeWar’s first day as director was May 24, and he has been particularly busy since move-in day. He said the lodges are currently full, and his biggest challenge so far has been getting to know all the students. He said he wants to be a part of the students’ experience in the lodges.

Professor’s experiences abroad help students in classroom

Anne Allen, assistant professor of fine arts, is not your typical western tourist. Allen travels because of her insatiable passion for the Pacific Southwest, its people, culture and arts. While on one of her many trips abroad, Allen said she’s perfectly content to stay in a modest youth hostel. “I don’t want to waste my money in some place where I’m not going to be spending much time at anyways,” Allen said.

Going from living in New Albany to living in Odessa, Ukraine, is quite an adjustment. We were picked up at the Odessa train station by Maxym and Autsana. Maxym spoke some English and Autsana spoke Russian. They piled us into the small white van and we sped down through the streets. The ride was bumpy and a little frightening.

Sophomore works to juggle athletics, education

Kayla Duke, pre-nursing sophomore, is at home on the softball field. She’s been playing since she was nine years old. Duke has been a pitcher for the IUS softball team for two years, and said she loves it.

Senior pitcher puts together solid campaign during his final season

Adam Lipke, general studies senior, was named Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 22 to March 28. He gained the title after pitching a complete game shutout in a 6-0 win against Asbury College on March 27. Lipke struck out eight batters and surrendered only four hits during the game. This is the first time he has earned the award this season.

Spaniard cares for students

Montserrat Arjona-Sisto, Spanish lecturer, lives in Louisville with her husband and has been helping students at IU Southeast learn Spanish for the past nine years. But how did a woman from Jerez, Spain, end up teaching at IU Southeast? The simple answer is a man, but that’s only what got the ball rolling in this direction.

Assistant retires after 31 years

Mary Ann Braden, administrative assistant and office manager to the dean of Social Sciences, will be retiring this summer after 31 years at IU Southeast. Her job includes advising students on curriculum and ordering of any equipment or supplies and several other responsibilities.

Police officer uses street sense

For Theo Comer, a new IUS Police officer, growing up in Gary, Ind., is what influenced his passion for law enforcement. Gary is known as the murder capital of the world, and, growing up, Comer lost many friends to the violence. That is why he decided to become a police officer.
