Recycling program plans to expand

In October 2009, IU Southeast launched a new recycling program to decrease the amount of wasted material at the university. This recycling program requires students to toss items of plastic, paper, aluminum cans and cardboard into the designated recycling bins on campus. Once a week, trucks from Quality Recycling Specialist visit IU Southeast to pick up the school’s recycling and takes it back to their facility to sort each product.

IUS students make online movie podcast

Movies have been sources of entertainment for many years, and, for three Indiana University Southeast students, it’s a passion. Brad Anderson, finance senior, Charlie Gonzalez, communication and advertising junior, and Jesse Rasmussen, communication and advertising junior, run the movie review Web site, MovieFanHouse.com, where they have their podcast. “Brad and I worked together and used to listen to podcasts, but they never talked about anything we liked,” Gonzalez said.

Denbo defeats Bonsall in SGA President election

After entering the race less than a week before the Student Government Association election, SGA president-elect Amanda Denbo, business senior, officially defeated the presidential incumbent, James Bonsall. Denbo and her running mate, Tristan Williamson, English junior, received 54 percent of the student votes, successfully defeating current SGA president Bonsall, business junior, and his running mate, Kevin Evans, elementary education freshman.

Prospective students attend Open House

On Saturday, March 13, IU Southeast hosted their biannual Open House from 9 a.m. to noon in the Hoosier Room. More than 500 high school and transfer students, along with their families, were expected to attend.

Pell Grants now available at IUS for summer sessions

Beginning this summer, Pell Grants are available to qualifying students, due to the Higher Education Opportunity Act enacted on Aug. 14, 2008. Previously, students could only receive one Pell allotment in a year, including the summer, meaning the only way a student could use that money during the summer was if they were not enrolled full-time during the fall and spring.

Housing rates to rise 1 percent next year

For the 2010-2011 school year, the rate per semester for a dorm is going to increase. In 2009, the IU Southeast Budget Committee, which consists of upper administration, met to discuss rates for the dorms. These rates are set biennially, which means they are set every two years. “This coincides with how the Indiana legislature’s budget cycles are set,” Seuth Chaleunphonh, dean of Student Life and acting director of Residence Life, said. “IUS recommends increases and the IU Board of Trustees approves for all campuses.”

Dean steps down

After 12 years, Cliff Staten, dean of Social Sciences, is leaving his position as dean to become a full-time faculty member. Staten said he decided to retire from the dean position because he wanted a change of pace.

Organization educates campus on veterans

On Friday, March 5, the Military Family Research Institute gave a presentation describing the issues unique to both student veterans and student service members in University Center North, room 122, as part of Operation Diploma. There were two speakers at the event, Sara Appel, MFRI outreach specialist, and Dale Brown, IUS Student Veterans Organization facilitator.

SGA faces election controversy

Tempers flared during the Student Government Meeting on Thursday, March 11, leading to a withdrawal of both presidential and vice presidential candidates and the SGA treasurer quitting entirely. It all started when SGA senator Nick Garing, political science junior, introduced a bill during the meeting that would lower the constitutional requirement that executive SGA members maintain a 2.5 GPA to a 2.2 GPA and announcing he intended to run for an executive position.

Basketball team wins championship

The IUS men’s basketball team, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, defeated the No. 2 seed, the Brescia University Bearcats, 78-71 to win their third-straight Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship on Saturday, Feb. 27, in Frankfort, Ky.
