Local journalist discusses Haitian disaster, recovery

Gaunt, ill faces of Haitian children and adults haunt a photo presentation created by a Courier-Journal photographer Kylene Lloyd. The photo presentation was produced from real pictures Lloyd took while visiting Haiti after the tragic earthquake that killed thousands. On Tuesday, April 13, the Social Sciences forum hosted an event featuring a Courier-Journal journalist who was sent to Haiti after the earthquake hit.

Spring forum raises privacy awareness

On Thursday, April 8, the IUS Civil Liberties Union hosted their annual spring forum about students’ right of privacy at school and on the Internet. It was located in the third floor reading gallery of the IUS Library. A panel of speakers each talked about students’ rights of privacy in certain areas and answered questions from the audience afterward. Each speaker was allotted 10 to 15 minutes to talk. About 70 people attended the forum.

SGA reviews achievements throughout year

After planning an inauguration event, the Student Government Association discussed what they’ve achieved this year. First, during the Thursday, April 15, meeting, SGA members planned an event for the upcoming inauguration of president-elect, Amanda Denbo, business senior, and her running mate, Tristan Williamson, English junior. Members allocated a budget of $700 for the event and plan to hand out free hot dogs to students on April 22 — the day they will be inaugurated.

Age discrimination questioned by dean

On June 30, Annette Wyandotte, dean of the School of Arts and Letters, will be forced to step down from her position because of an IU policy. According to the IU Academic Handbook, “Individuals holding administrative positions that are bona fide executive or high policy-making positions may be required to retire from their administrative positions at the end of the academic year in which they turn 65.”

Students awarded for involvement

On Wednesday, March 31, IU Southeast held its annual Campus Commitment to Student Learning Awards ceremony, celebrating the achievements of student leaders, organizations and faculty. The event, entitled “A Cut Above The Rest,” included many awards such as Student Program Council Awards, Greek Awards and the Outstanding Student Organization Award.

University updates purchasing, police

A meeting to inform administrators and faculty about the recent Purchasing Department transition took place on Thursday, April 1, in the University Center North building. Jill Schunk, of the IU Bloomington Purchasing Office, was host of the open-session meeting, where she discussed the recent IU purchasing reorganization and answered questions relating to the purchasing changes.

SGA passes signature amendment

During their meeting on April 9, the Student Government Association increased the amount of signatures it takes for someone to contest an election. In order for someone to run for an executive SGA position, they must gather signatures from three percent of the student body. The signatures are turned in to the SGA chief justice before students are given a chance to vote.

Political professionals attend Sanders Series

On Monday, March 29, the first Sanders Speaker Series welcomed Dana Perino, former White House press secretary, and Donna Brazile, vice chair of voter registration and participation at the Democratic National Committee to the Richard K. Stem Concert Hall in the Ogle Center. There were about 100 people at the event.

Business lecturer dies

The business school suffered a loss during spring break. Gregory Krieger, visiting lecturer in accounting, died Wednesday, March 24, at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, Ind. He was 55 years old.

Former president of Ecuador visits

Former president of Ecuador, Jamil Mahuad, was deposed during a coup in 2000. The coup was a result of economic dissatisfaction in the country, yet he hasn’t let that keep him from his passion about Latin American politics and economics.

SGA discusses textbook rental program for IUS Bookstore

After the week-long break, the Student Government Association got back to work by discussing a possible Barnes & Noble book rental pilot program. During the Thursday, April 1, meeting, SGA press secretary Candice Boudreaux, business junior, introduced a textbook rental program resolution to urge members of the IUS faculty to support the IUS Bookstore possibly running a pilot program with IU Bloomington.
