Picnic invites veterans

IU Southeast welcomed students and faculty to an afternoon of food, fun and networking at the first Student Veterans Family Picnic. Held at the shelter adjacent to the IUS Lake, the picnic was a way for the campus to help make the transition from military life to the classroom easier for student veterans. Jack Howell, IUS Veterans Affairs certifying official, assists student veterans with their benefits and is aware of the challenges they face with education, whether it be enrollment or dealing with their GI Bill of Rights.

New organization debates religion

Free Thinkers A new student group, the Free Thinkers for Education and Morality, is geared toward diversity within the campus community. Amber Crawford, nursing sophomore, is the president of the Free Thinkers. She began the student group along with Zak Denham, music technology senior and vice president, as an outlet for the atheist, agnostic and undecided demographic.

Campus Boogie sparks student interest

A crowd of students gathered in the Robinson Theater on Aug. 26 when Campus Boogie had its annual dance-off. Campus Boogie is a dance competition where several students go head-to-head to win the Campus Boogie plaque, a $300 prize to spend toward the organization and bragging rights as the “best dance crew” at IU Southeast. Although it is an annual event, this Campus Boogie differed from previous years.

Student writes about experiences abroad

My seven teammates and I were stuffed into a small white van and taken to the outskirts of Odessa, Ukraine. We hung on for dear life as the van jerked and weaved through traffic. We reached an area outside Odessa known as Palermo, a name which is meant to reference the city in Sicily run by the mafia. If one walks a short way to the left, there is a hill and a long field leading into an estuary.

Magician returns to campus, performs

Michael Kent, magician, returned for a second time to perform for students on Aug. 25. The Student Program Counsel asked Kent back again this semester to perform for Week of Welcome. “I loved it here the first time, and I was performing nearby, so I hoped they’d invite me back,” Kent said.

Students acquire teaching experience

On Saturday, June 5, the Summer in Ecuador Program celebrated its ninth anniversary as students left to teach English in a foreign country. The program is part of exploring diversity in education. Although some English is taught, students also teach some regular content depending on the requests of the schools.

HullabaLOU brings artists, heat

The HullabaLOU Music Festival brought big names in music to Louisville. Churchill Downs hosted the three-day festival, which started on Friday, July 23. It was the first time that Churchill Downs has hosted such an event. The headliners included Bon Jovi, Dave Matthews and Kenny Chesney. More than 78,000 fans came in from 47 states

Local church hosts IUS Choirs’ spring choral concert

The IUS Concert Choir and Community Chorus held their spring choral concert on Sunday, April 11 at 3 p.m. at the Centenary United Methodist Church in New Albany. This was the first time the choir had sung at a different venue besides the Stem Concert Hall in the Ogle Center at IU Southeast.

Students rally for ONE Campaign

On Wednesday, April 7, the ONE Campaign met in Crestview Hall to discuss the group’s initiative and try to make an organization on campus. The ONE Campaign is a group designed to end poverty, particularly in Africa. Matt Sheffield, philosophy graduate, said he hopes to begin the organization at IU Southeast and gain student interest.

Food Court offers variety, healthy choices on campus

For years, cafeterias have received a negative review, despite their dependability and variety. While the Food Court offers a variety of food choices to fit student’s tastes and convenience, some students still prefer to make their own lunches or visit a nearby restaurant. “I would rather bring something from home to eat because it’s healthier and cheaper, but it’s also a hassle, so I usually just buy food from the cafeteria unless I have time to prepare a lunch,” Alexa Ferguson, secondary education junior, said.
