Students employ tips for better résumés

The IUS Résumé Preparation Workshop was an informative and educational event that took place in University Center North, room 112 on Feb. 1. This workshop was offered by the Career Development Center. Trey Lewis, director of the Career Development Center, greeted students before presenting his résumé Power Point. Lewis said the four components a student should use are what, when, why and how.

‘The Black-Jew Dialogues’ spreads laughter, message

Ron Jones and Larry Jay Tish, co-creators and performers, presented a play called “The Black-Jew Dialogues” at the Stem Concert Hall in the Ogle Center on Jan. 13. In the play, several probAlems in society and experiences in everyday lives were addressed, such as racism, religious issues and bullying. Jones and Tish were very flexible with Jewish, white and black humor and jokes.

Musical performance premieres

The Robinson Theater will open with its first play — a musical called The Fantasticks — of the semester on Feb. 10 at 8 p.m. in the Ogle Center. The original production of The Fantasticks first premiered in May 1960 in Greenwich Village, NY, and has been appearing on off-Broadway for the past 70 years. It is he longest-running show in the U.S. “It’s become such a classic show,” Jesse Brown, theater graduate, said. “I think that’s in large part due to the fact that it tells such a simple story, one we can relate to on some level.”

Chamber players enchant audience

Ceruti Chamber Players cracked jokes and played both new and old classical music Jan. 29 at the Stem Concert Hall in the Ogle Center. Admission for the event was free, and the chamber players performed four pieces during the one-hour concert. “Our first piece ‘Canzonne Vecchione’ sounds like an Italian folk song, so if you feel like going to get a pizza you will know why,” Robert Docs, double bass player, said during the performance. “I’m the clown of the group.”

Guest speaker cautions against climate change

Guest speaker Jim Chen, dean and professor of law at the University of Louisville, discussed "Three Faces of Climate Change Law in the United States" at IU Southeast on Jan. 26. Chen spoke about ways that U.S. citizens can take action toward climate change problems using three recent case studies to provide examples. “I really enjoyed that the event was sociable,” Justin Levesque, psychology student, said. “It was also very individualized. My philosophy professor told me about this event.”

Legendary jockey leaps through hurdles

In honor of National Mentoring Month, the Center for Mentoring welcomed Pat Day, Hall of Fame jockey, to speak about his life’s successes on and off the race track on Jan. 13 in the Hoosier Room. Since its creation at the Harvard School of Public Health in 2002, January has been declared National Mentoring Month, a time when people across the country are encouraged to show gratitude to those in their lives that have shown them direction and guidance. June Huggins, director for the Center of Mentoring, said Jan. 26 is Thank Your Mentor Day, and people celebrating will write personal letters to their mentors to thank them for the various ways in which they have been supportive. She said a mentor can be anyone — a teacher, a church member, a neighbor or a relative.

Students turn new pages in old books

During the Altered Book closing reception on Jan. 20, students were able to see many pieces of 3-D art created from the pages of books. “I like how it shows books that wouldn’t normally be read.” Kate Moore, coordinator of electronic resources of the IUS Library, said. Moore reserved the space in the IUS Library art gallery for the event.

Year of Dragon dances through IUS campus

The Adult Student Center and Children’s Center celebrated the Year of the Dragon as a part of the Chinese New Year on Jan. 23. Once every month, various offices within IU Southeast take turns hosting the Diversity Brown Bag Lunch series to raise awareness on diversity. Wanda Gregory, coordinator of the Children’s Center, explained the purpose of the event.

Artist draws on experience

To kick off 2012, the Ronald Barr Gallery opened with the “Drawing on Experience” exhibit by Emily Sheehan, artist and visiting assistant professor of fine arts, on Jan. 11. Seven works are represented in this show. All the works are based on the same concept of perceptual drawing, or, in other words, drawing from observation in a multi-sensory way. “I completed three of the works in the show prior to my coming to teach at IU Southeast,” Sheehan said. “The rest of the work in the show is brand new, completed in my campus studio space in the last six months.”

Open Books discussion debates ‘The Great Gatsby’

Class, wealth and old money were some of the many topics brought up during the Open Book discussion of “The Great Gatsby” on Jan. 13. Jacqueline Johnson, coordinator of Collection Development of the IUS Library, led the discussion. “Open Books is a reading group that meets the second Friday of each month in the IUS Library,” Johnson said.

Nursing professor imparts advice for healthy lifestyle

Jacquelyn Reid, professor of nursing, spoke to students about healthy lifestyles on Jan. 18. The lecture was part of the Common Experience series. Reid has taught at IU Southeast for more than 10 years and said she accepted the opportunity to speak to students outside of her program. “I felt like I could put a presentation together that would relate to a cross section of students,” Reid said. The speech intended to educate students about health and wellness and to present several Internet resources for continuing education.

Spanish Club livens up fiesta

The Spanish Club hosted their first event this semester. A fiesta was held in honor of Day of the Living in the Game Room on Nov. 17. Alexina Wilson, Spanish junior and president of the Spanish Club, said their Day of the Living fiesta was just a play on the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead. “The holiday is meant for gatherings of family and friends to remember loved ones who have died,” Wilson said.
