The IU Southeast women’s basketball team won big Tuesday night over St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Every player on the Grenadiers scored en route to a 104-79 blow out.

The Grenadiers were up 40-15 with ten minutes left in the first half. They did not allow SMWC to break the 20-point mark until 2:04 left to play in the first half.

“This was an all team effort,” Head Coach Robin Farris said. “It’s good to see everyone coming in and doing their job.”

Farris is trying to get his team back on track after last season. The Grenadiers had a record of 16-12 overall and a conference record of 11-6, before getting upset in the first round of the KIAC tournament.

Senior guard, Megan Cureton, led the way in scoring for the Grenadiers with 17 points. Senior point guard, Heather Wheat, had 16 points and freshman guard, Jade Spaulding, added 13 points off the bench.

The Grenadiers struggled to rebound the basketball in their season opener last Saturday against Kentucky Christian, but they out rebounded the Pomeoreys by 27. One-third of the rebounding came from the bench. Sophmore forward, Kaylee Bennett had 12 and Mary Dye, junior center, pulled down 10.

“We had to come out tonight and play very physical and get after the ball,” Dye said. “We got the rebounds and made the outlet pass and that’s what got our transition offense working so well and got so many wide open layups.”

The Grenadiers did just that as they dominated the paint, outscoring the Pomeroys 72-24 down low. As Dye said, the Grenadiers were able to break the full-court press that the Pomeroys used which led to 16 fast break points and high percentage shots.

IU Southeast never trailed in this game, and at one point led by as many as 33. They shot 55 percent from the field in the game.

“We played together,” Dye said. “But there are still things to work on. It’s still early in the season.”
The Month of November should provide a good test for the Grenadiers. IU Southeast travels to Indianapolis on Nov. 21 to play in the Huntington Tournament-Huntington, before welcoming rival Lindsey Wilson to New Albany on Nov. 25.

IU Southeast will try to extend their winning streak to three on Nov. 15 when they host Malone College at 1 p.m. in the Activities Building.
